Thus, the bug is that kernel >=2.6.22 is incompatible with xserver-xorg-video-ati >=1:6.6.192-1. For the record, I tried 1:6.6.193-1 as well; it has the same problem. I don't know which of the kernel and the driver is actually at fault so am duplicating the bug rather than reassigning it. To reiterate, the problem is that with the bad combination of kernel and X video driver, after X starts, I get a totally black screen and an unresponsive keyboard. The computer is not altogether dead; pressing the power button makes it shut down in an orderly manner. zw

Hi Zack,
Could you send the output of
/usr/share/bug/xserver-xorg/script 3>&1
so that we see your whole config and log?
I think the support for your board changed a lot recently since some
work has been done to get DRI to work on it. Did you have DRI with
earlier drivers or kernels ? Does it help if you disable DRI explicitely
in xorg.conf ? (with something as below)
Section "Module"
Disable "dri"
EndSection
Is there a chance you try to git bisect the upstream git tree to locate
when the problem appeared? Or at least try 6.6.191 and 6.6.3-5 ? They
are intermediate releases between 6.6.3 and 6.6.192. i386 packages are
available at:

Three files are attached: * xserver-xorg.buginfo is the output of the bug script. The X server log in there is with kernel 2.6.22 and driver 6.6.3. * xorg.0.log.death is an X server log with kernel 2.6.22 and driver 6.6.192 leading to a black screen. * Xorg.0.log.old is another server log, with kernel 2.6.21 and driver 6.6.192 or possibly .193. > I think the support for your board changed a lot recently since some > work has been done to get DRI to work on it. Did you have DRI with > earlier drivers or kernels ? It appears (from the logs) that I have DRI on this board only with kernel 2.6.22+ and driver 6.6.192+; not with either an older kernel or an older driver. I tried to disable DRI by blacklisting the kernel modules but it didn't work. I will try the xorg.conf recipe you describe (with the newer driver) and see what happens. > Is there a chance you try to git bisect the upstream git tree to locate > when the problem appeared? With, in addition, the glx module disabled in the Modules section (but the dri module still loaded) I do not get a black screen. However, the server log in that condition suggests that the driver doesn't do the DRI/DRM thing then, so perhaps that isn't as interesting a data point as I thought it might be. zw

The upstream developer says (on #xorg-devel in case you're interested):
"hmm this isn't very good, his gpu is just crashing"
Now he wants you to do
echo 1 > /sys/modules/drm/parameters/debug
before starting X, then start X and send the output of dmesg.
Sorry it is so long to debug, the support for your board is very young :(
Thanks,
Brice

Hi Zack, The upstream dev does not see why you get this problem, there might be something strange in your board. You could try changing the driver to use your chipset as a non-mobility board. To do so, get the sources, open radeon_driver.c, look for "case PCI_CHIP_RC410_5A62" in function RADEONPreInitChipType() and comment out the line info->IsMobility = TRUE right after it. You can do that either in the debian package source (let me know if you need help to get/build it) or directly in the upstream git tree (there's a how-to at http://bgoglin.livejournal.com/10936.html). I seem to have the same problem with my Radeon XPRESS 200M (PCI ID 1002:5a42) on an LG LE50 Express laptop whenever DRI is not disabled in xorg.conf - except that the screen is garbled instead of blank. Power button or SysRq-B is needed to reboot. This is with kernel 2.6.23-rc3 and xserver-xorg-video-ati 6.7.192-1. Marcus (Attached xorg.conf has DRI disabled again, otherwise it's identical.)

I'd like to dust off this bug report ... with xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.7.197-1 and linux-image-2.6.22-3-686 2.6.22-6 the situation is much improved but I still can't get 3D acceleration. By default, the driver declines to enable DRI; with no xorg.conf I get (II) RADEON(0): Direct rendering not officially supported on RN50/RC410 and it works correctly, except of course for not doing accelerated OpenGL. If I force it to enable DRI in xorg.conf, then upon starting X, I see the initial gray stipple pattern over the bottom two-thirds of the screen. The top third of the screen is garbled. No further display updates occur; however, the cursor shows up, is responsive to the mouse, and changes shape appropriately (e.g. from arrow to I-beam when over where the gdm login box ought to be). I can ctrl-alt-backspace out of X, which does not recover the console, but I can blind-type a reboot. I suspect that the gdm reboot menu would also work, but I can't do that blind. I'm attaching: Xorg.0.log.old is the server log with DRI enabled; Xorg.0.log is the server log with DRI default-disabled; and xorg.conf.dis is the xorg.conf I am using to force DRI on. I will try again with 2.6.23 and report whether that helps. Also, in January I might actually have time to try experimental drivers. zw

I guess that was still when forcing DRI on, right? The upstream devs
decided to force DRI off on some boards like yours because they are not
supported well yet. The good thing is that you don't get a black screen
with a default config anymore :/ I am retitling your bug report accordingly.
I don't think the experimental drivers will help here, they mostly only
bring some 2D support for newer boards (r500/r600), nothing new for
RS480 boards like yours. With Alex (one of the upstream devs) working at
AMD, I hope you can expect some improvements in the future.

With the very latest unstable kernel (linux-image-2.6.24-1-686
package, version 2.6.24-5):
* the git driver by default (no xorg.conf at all) declines to enable
DRI. It also uses XAA by default, and says that I have to use EXA if
I want Render acceleration. However, it works just fine. I'm using
it right now, and will report any problems that arise.
* I tried forcing DRI on with an xorg.conf which reads in its entirety
Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Technologies Inc RC410 [Radeon Xpress 200M]"
Driver "ati"
BusID "PCI:1:5:0"
Option "DRI" "on"
# Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
EndSection
When I restarted gdm after this, it went straight to my desktop
instead of drawing the login screen; it's not supposed to do that.
The desktop was drawn correctly, except for a strip at the very top of
the screen which was garbled. The mouse pointer appeared and moved
around the screen in response to the touchpad. However, the rest of
the display was frozen, including things like the gnome-system-monitor
graphs that update without user intervention, and Ctrl-Alt-F1 did not
give me back a text console. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace *did* kill the X
server, or at least, the mouse pointer stopped moving. But then the
keyboard was unresponsive; neither blind-typing "reboot" at the text
console with root logged in nor Alt-SysRQ-B did anything. I was able
to shut down in an orderly fashion by pressing the power button (i.e.
I didn't have to hold it down to force poweroff).
* I also tried forcing EXA on, by uncommenting the AccelMethod line in
the above and commenting out the DRI line. This works correctly but
is visibly *much* slower than XAA - repaints are delayed when I scroll
windows, text boxes cannot keep up with my typing, and anything that
changes the screen makes the CPU spike. (I was under the impression
EXA was a failed, abandoned experiment?)
* I did not try enabling both EXA and DRI.

Hi, same problem here with an ATI Radeon X1300, freshly dist-upgraded lenny (xorg 7.3). Asked on debian-user with no luck. Everything is fine with kernel 2.6.18 from etch, black screen with kernek >= 2.6.22. With later kernels, both the vesa and the radeonhd xorg driver have similar problems: black screen with garbage from the console for vesa, no fonts, wrong colors and almost white window frames only with radeonhd. tag 437321 moreinfo thanks Samuel Mimram <samuel.mimram@ens-lyon.org> (17/02/2009): > Unfortunately I cannot manage to get a more meaningful backtrace, > even with the -dbg packages installed... Hi, still having this bug? Other submitters no longer have access to their systems, and it's supposed to be fixed upstream. As for the backtrace showed in Xorg.log that's about it, you'd have to get a full backtrace from gdb (preferably from another machine, through ssh) to get something more specific. Mraw, KiBi.
