Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel Version: 2:2.0.0-1 Severity: normal This seems very similar to bug #424952, but manifests differently. I have a Dell Dimension with an i845 Rev 1 graphics. I've been happily using it in 1280x1024 mode for a couple of years. I upgraded today to the new intel driver and and X started using modes with a 4:3 aspect ratio. If I tried to force 1280x1024, I would get "no usable screen". Downgrading to the i810 (1.7.2-4) fixed the problem. If there's more data you need, let me know. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (500, 'oldstable'), (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-4-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=he_IL.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=he_IL.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages xserver-xorg-video-intel depends on: ii libc6 2.5-9+b1 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libdrm2 2.3.0-4 Userspace interface to kernel DRM ii xserver-xorg-core 2:1.3.0.0.dfsg-6 X.Org X server -- core server xserver-xorg-video-intel recommends no packages.

Please try xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.0.0-5 currently in experimental.
It contains a much more recent git snapshot. If it does not help, please
send the whole output of
/usr/share/bug/xserver-xorg/script 3>&1

It's the resolution it selects is actually 1280x768, not 1280x960. Output of the bug script is below. I thought this bug might be because I hadn't cleaned out all the xfree86 cruft from my xorg.conf, so I generated a new xorg.conf using "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg". That didn't make any difference, but I'm including that alternate config at the very end for completeness Contents of /var/lib/x11/X.roster: xserver-xfree86 xserver-xorg /etc/X11/X target does not match checksum in /var/lib/x11/X.md5sum. What does "xrandr" say? Does "xrandr --verbose" show the modes listed above? Did you select your mode with "xrandr --mode 1280x1024"? Work is ongoing in the server to make xorg.conf redundant altogether. One thing you could try is deleting xorg.conf completely and seeing what kind of success you get. Or alternatively delete the Modes lines from the Screen section. Drew

Hello, I also have the same problem since the upgrade to version 2.0.0-1.x of xserver-xorg-video-intel. before the upgrade everything worked fine with the same X configuration and since the upgrade I'm working with the vesa driver. I'm not using a Modeline configuration. I've removed the xorg.conf file and generated an new one using dpkg-reconfigure - same problem. I've just installed version 2.0.0-5 of xserver-xorg-video-intel and the problem remains. I'm attaching the relevant files. The output to the first two commands is below. I didn't know about xrandr and using it to resize. When I tried the command above involving --mode, I got a usage message but that's it. I'll be losing access to this machine in a few days (new job), so I won't be able to help with tings for much longer. -- Itai Seggev Visiting Assistant Professor Office: Lewis 121A Department of Physics and Astronomy Phone: +1-662-915-3887 University of Mississippi Fax: +1-662-915-5045

But I am pretty confident that your problem is just about the preferred mode of your monitor not being the largest one, and xrandr should allow to change it after starting X. Brice

Hello Brice, As I've mentioned on my previous mail (July 1, 2007 ) - I'm also having this problem. using the preferred mode didn't really helped and I'm currently returned to the 1.7.2-4 version of xserver-xorg-video-i810 from Etch, which is working great as it used to be. Please let me know how or what actions I can do in order to solve this. # lspci | grep VGA 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82915G/GV/910GL Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 04) Cheers, Gal On 8/9/07, Brice Goglin <Brice.Goglin@ens-lyon.org> wrote: > > Itai Seggev wrote: > > The output to the first two commands is below. > > Did you forget to paste it ? > > > I didn't know about > > xrandr and using it to resize. What about replying to Drew's question too? :) What resolution do you want? What does xrandr say? Does xrandr --output VGA --mode 800x600 or so help you getting the right resolution after X startup? ... Brice

Hello, I'm using 1280x1024 resolution and trying to use it on version: 2.1.0-2 I've re-installed: xserver-xorg-video-intel version: 2.1.0-2 xrandr --output VGA --mode 1280x1024 Show it kind'a distorted, but it shows in 1280x1024 resolution. # apt-cache policy xbase-clients xbase-clients: Installed: 1:7.2.ds2-2 Candidate: 1:7.2.ds2-2 I did another tes: I've added: Modeline "1280x1024_75.00" 138.54 1280 1368 1504 1728 1024 1025 1028 1069 -HSync +Vsync Which i got from the command: gtf 1280 1024 75 and added: Option "PreferredMode" "1280x1024_75.00" to the Section "Monitor". Seems like it did something. the resolution was 1280x1024, but the screen was placed to the left side and on the right side I add about 50 pixels of black color. I've returned back to: 1.7.2-4 version of xserver-xorg-video-i810 from Etch. Good to know, so your monitor probably does not have 1280x1024 as a preferred mode and thus the driver does not use by default. The distortion could be related to a i9xx bug in 2.1. I think it appeared in 2.0.0-6. Does the problem go away if you try 2.0.0-5 or latest upstream git? FYI, 2.0.0-5 is available at http://snapshot.debian.net/archive/2007/06/22/debian/pool/main/x/xserver-xorg-video-intel/ > Modeline "1280x1024_75.00" 138.54 1280 1368 1504 1728 1024 1025 > 1028 1069 -HSync +Vsync > > Which i got from the command: > gtf 1280 1024 75 > > and added: > Option "PreferredMode" "1280x1024_75.00" According to the xrandr output below, it might be 108 or 135MHz instead of 75. > Seems like it did something. the resolution was 1280x1024, but the > screen was placed to the left side and on the right side I add about > 50 pixels of black color. My monitor can only support up to 80 on this resolution. The xrandr output is before I've tried the preferred mode. Do you also need the output after I'm defining Option "PreferredMode" "1280x1024_75.00" ? If there is a border related problem - I have no problem to install an updated version from experimental and test it. No, but I need the xrandr output *without --verbose*. It should a line such has 1280x800 60.0*+ 60.0 which for instance tells us that 1280x80_60 is the preferred mode for the monitor (or somebody should tell me where is the preferred mode in the --verbose output). Please do it before adding PreferredMode (I don't know whether it modifies the xrandr output, but it certainly could). > If there is a border related problem - I have no problem to install an > updated version from experimental and test it. We don't have such a package yet, we need to make sure the upstream git is in a good shape before packaging it. But, in the meantime, since the border problem appeared in 2.0.0-6, it would be nice to test 2.0.0-5 (see below). > FYI, 2.0.0-5 is available at > http://snapshot.debian.net/archive/2007/06/22/debian/pool/main/x/xserver-xorg-video-intel/ > Thanks Brice

Gal Gur-Arie wrote: > 1280x768 60.0* Ok there is no preferred mode at all, it probably explains why you don't get 1280x1024 by default and why you need to choose a PreferredMode in xorg.conf or run xrandr --output VGA --mode 1280x1024 after starting X. It's not clear there is something better to expect soon here. > I've the same problem when using 2.0.0-5. Which one ? 1) The wrong is chosen by default ? expected as explained above. 2) "it kind'a distorted" ? 3) "the screen was placed to the left side and on the right side I add about 50 pixels of black color." ? If you want to test the current upstream git and need help to build it, let me know. Brice

If there is an HOW TO page or some document how to build a deb from the upstream git. it will be great. Thanks, Gal Brice > >

Thanks. building the module is really easy & quick.
I've compiled it and copied it to: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/
I've restarted the gdm - it didn't solve the problem.
I guess it is problem of the driver developer and not Debian package - am I
right?
The expected mode is not used.
When modifying the xorg.conf to use the preferred mode the screen was placed
to the left side and on the right side I add
about 50 pixels of black color.

From a subsequent email in this thread, I figured out that I need to add --output VGA to the command line. Once I did this, I was able to set the resolution to my desired resolution. It still seems to be a bug that before the upgrade in respected my preferences in xorg.conf, but afterwards it didn't. -- Itai Seggev Visiting Assistant Professor Office: Lewis 121A Department of Physics and Astronomy Phone: +1-662-915-3887 University of Mississippi Fax: +1-662-915-5045

Ok looking at your previous reply with the xrandr output, it looks like
there is no preferred mode for your screen so there are few chances the
driver choosing the one you want. What you call a "bug" is actually that
the xorg.conf way to choose a mode has changed. The "Modes" line
isn'really t used anymore. To choose your preferred mode, say 1280x1024
at 75Hz, you should:
Get a modeline with:
$ gtf 1280 1024 75
# 1280x1024 @ 75.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 80.17 kHz; pclk: 138.54 MHz
Modeline "1280x1024_75.00" 138.54 1280 1368 1504 1728 1024 1025
1028 1069 -HSync +Vsync
And then add the last line above and the following to the monitor
section of your xorg.conf
Option "PreferredMode" "1280x1024_75.00"
(as explained in
http://www.tetromino.net/blog/2007/04/25/manual-modesetting-for-xf86-video-intel/)
Let me know if this helps.

Ok. Let's keep the previous bug report (#430885) for the "1280x1024 not being used by default" problem (which is almost fixed). I have cloned it into a new bug report (this one, #436942) to deal with your black border and distorted display. Please reply to the right one :) Brice

Hi, I took a few shots of the bug. sorry for the poor quality - but I think it shows the problem. Images: 13-08-07_1.jpg and 13-08-07_2.jpg are showing the 50px black space when using the prefered mode. image: 13-08-07_3.jpg is showing the distorted screen when using the "xrandr --output VGA --mode 1280x1024" command. Since there were problems with the driver - I've added some ATI video card that our sys. admin. has arranged. I'll try to switch back to the intel one and update you. Gal, feel free to reopen if you're able to reproduce this with the intel driver version 2.2.1 or newer. Thanks for your report! Cheers, Julien
