Thank you for your interest! Of course I would be happy to see jockey
in Debian as well. The Debian and Ubuntu branches shouldn't be
significantly different. Ideally we could add a few runtime checks (e.
g. which package management GUI is available) and use a shared branch
for both? This should minimize maintenance overhead.

How would you feel about co-maintaining the package with me? Feel free
to ping me on IRC ("pitti" on Freenode).

Thanks,

Martin

I just tested to build jockey version 0.5.8-0ubuntu6 from Ubuntu using
pbuilder with unstable, and the build failed with this error:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
    python-kde4: Depends: python-qt4 (< 4.7-2+~) but 4.7.2-1 is to be installed.
Depends: python-sip4 (>= <none>) but 4.10.1-1 is to be installed.

I guess some work is needed on dependencies before jockey can go into
Debian.

Is there any work going on at the moment to get jockey into Debian?
It seem like a good compromize to make it easy to get hardware
requiring non-free stuff working, while still making it clear for the
user that the hardware do not work with free software.

Happy hacking,

I did not take a look at it recently as I am primarily working on
python-apt releases. The last time I looked, there were some more
changes needed.

I guess I'll just take jockey, get it buildable and upload it
to experimental first, and then start working on the Debian
integration.

Sound good. I had a look at the source, and did not find much ubuntu
specific in it. The repository names in jockey/oslib.py need to be
adjusted (restricted/multiverse), for sure, but I did not find any
other Ubuntu specific code (did not check al of the source). Because
of this, I suspect it could go directly into unstable. At least I
fail to see what it could break by showing up in unstable directly. :)

At the moment I have a test laptop that need the nvidia drivers to get
working 3D, and can thus test the package. Not sure how long I will
be able to keep the laptop, so it would be nice if a test package was
available soon. :)

Happy hacking,

Hello Julian, hello Petter,

Some details about that: Most of Jockey's code is OS independent. In
particular, trunk (bzr branch lp:jockey) does not have any
Debian/Ubuntu specifics.

Everything which is Linux specific is contained in jockey/oslib.py,
which needs to be implemented on a particular distro. trunk has an
implementation for Linux and PackageKit, and the test suite ensures
that it's working with at least Ubuntu's PackageKit; about a year ago
I also got it working on Fedora Core 10.

The Ubuntu branch changes jockey/oslib.py to use python-apt and dpkg,
since that is quite a bit faster and probably also more reliable than
PackageKit.

It's probably best if you'd just run the test suite (tests/run) on
current Sid and see how far you get. I also have some tests for the
GTK/KDE implementations (tests/run-gtk, tests/run-kde); they are a bit
brittle, but they should be good enough for a coarse check whether
everything is alright with pyqt/pykde.

The other distro specific bits are the available handlers in
data/handlers/. Some of them are probably alright for Debian (like
b43 or sl_modem), but some others will need heavy adaption. In
Ubuntu we have quite a complex structure for the nVidia drivers, which
is radically different than Debian's.

For testing handlers on a machine which doesn't need restricted
drivers (or not the one you want to test), I recommend creating a
"fake" modalias file in /usr/share/jockey/modaliases/local which maps
a kmod/package name to a "match everywhere" glob:

-------------------- 8< -------------------
alias pci:* wl bcmwl-kernel-source
alias pci:* b43
alias pci:* nvidia nvidia-current
alias pci:* nvidia nvidia-173
alias pci:* fglrx xorg-driver-fglrx
-------------------- 8< -------------------

These files are evaluated in the LocalKernelModulesDriverDB class.

Please let me know if you have trouble with it.

Thanks,

Martin

I tried to package it a few weeks ago, but found out that it requires yet
another new package (python-xkit[1]). After looking at the "quality" of
that package, I lost my interest in packaging jockey.

But the Ubuntu package builds as it is, you just need to build
python-xkit first. If you want to, you can take this ITP.
