And what's the point of telling the Fedora Project what kind of
hardware that Debian users have? (And maybe how much more popular
Debian is than Fedora?)

What is the added value for Debian users of sending these informations
*to Fedora* ?

Ricky, perhaps you could make Fedora aware of hardware4linux and
suggest that both efforts be merged (since the Fedora one aims to be
multi-distro).

Modifying the package so it sends the data to a Debian server running
the same/similar software to Fedora's sounds reasonable though.

Not completely sure that there's much benefit to maintaining separate
servers for Debian data and Fedora data -- but *reporting* the data
separate would probably be a good thing if the proportion of Fedora users
with smolt is significantly different to the proportion of Debian users
with smolt. (That's because making a mistake on that score would be both
easy if the data were combined, and lead to wrong comparisons between
total Debian and Fedora users, to the detriment of whoever has the lower
proportion of users running smolt, which would presumably be Debian)

Integrating it with pop-con (or vice-versa) would be interesting.

Cheers,
aj

Smolt actually doesn't work very will in counting users in a "compare
Debian to Fedora to Mandrake" thing. We're only seeing a 10-15% uptake
rate. Its more there to get a large enough sample to determine what
machines to test for QA and development. The ratings system and
hardware Errata will be handy too (currently being worked on)

When a user submits a profile they will get a response with something
like "Please see SMOLT-53239 for information on configuring your nvidia
card" The ultimate goal to fix the hardware, but in the meantime give
details on how to install their hardware properly (that part will be
wiki based). You will, of course, be able to just look at debian
profiles in the near future. We're going to build a reporting tool that
allows direct access to the db so you could say "show me all debian
users with this nvidia card who are having problems"

/2 cents

Hi :-)

i saw this thread and since i use debian on several machines and fedora on
some others, i was thinking about asking Mike if it's possible to integrate
both projects and here is what he wrote back:

I'm open to integration but I have no doubt it will be difficult. It is
possible for debian boxes to report back to smolt, we even have a couple
of profiles in there already :)

================= end of email (to mike)

for now, i sent Hardware Profile from debian machines to hardware4linux.info
and Hardware Profile from fedora machines to smolt.

it would be very useful to have a hardware profile tool or some other tool
that can help users get all the _specific_ discussions about bugs and solved
issues regarding some specific piece of hardware they have trouble with.
using a GUI and not having to go through searching the internet.

btw.
i know Ubuntu has some reporting tool integrated with hal-device-manager

Hello,

As a sysadmin, I cannot stress enough the importance of having a
*centralised* site for reporting supported hardware and other
statistical data about the OS.

It is not about smolt being "a Fedora thing" or reporting to "a Fedora
site".

*Please* merge the programming & maintenance effort for having a
hardware profile common to many distros (be it smolt or other). And
create packages for all of them.

In Fedora bug no. 433105
(https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=433105) I've even suggested
integrating smolt with the Linux Counter.

It is not about the religious war of "my distro is better than yours",
but about the benefit of *all* community.

Best regards,
Răzvan

I can't agree that Smolt is Fedora-only solution.
OpenSUSE adopted this solution as well, and I was able to send profile
from OpenSUSE 11.1 Beta easily.

I have learned about http://hardware4linux.info/ just after doing Google
search about Smolt and Debian. :-)

Hardware4Linux is a nice project, but at a moment there are only ~ 3200
profiles available.
And you nee:
- register account at http://hardware4linux.info/
and wait about one hour to get login enabled
- upload test results manually
- answer 5 or 6 questions (does it work or not) on web form
I doubt majority of users would have so much time to come through all
those steps.

Kind regards,
Vadim Plessky

Indeed.

So the state of Smolt in Debian is this: I picked this package up on the road
to lenny and--knowing that any work would not be a part of that release--I
put it on low priority and concentrated on other things.

Technically, I have working packages, but the "difficult" work is with
getting a decent integration into the Debian system, particularly with
respect to integrating Smolt into the graphical desktop environments and
making it part of a default graphical installation - the adoption by other
distributions has opened doors there, at least for an initial discussion to
not be shot down on grounds of lack of other users.

So I guess it would certainly help to get some Ubuntu people with leverage on
board soon - it would seem a shame to duplicate effort there. Does anyone
know if they are remotely interested in this?

Chris,

Can you pls let me & everyone know from which repository/location Smolt
packages for Debian can be downloaded?

I just explored for myself Sidux Linux, which is very compact and
boots/installs very fast. And supports latest Wi-Fi adapters, like Atheros
11n.
Therefor it can be easily used for "fast profile checking"/profiling of
different compouters.
It is based on Debian. So Debian packages for Sidux (or other Debian-based
distributions) can be very useful.
I think that it would be good idea to tolk to MEPIS guys, I have very good
impression from latest SimplyMEPIS 8 Beta.
MEPIS is also Debian-based, and it seems it's quite popular.

Best regards,
Vadim

Hello - and A Happy New Year ! ;-)

Please agree with me that writing good quality Linux drivers, for as
much hardware as possible and in "real time", is one of the top
priorities nowdays - no matter what distro one uses.

Ultimately, achieving this leads to increased Linux adoption, more
business for all and less monopoly constraints.

Smolt is meant to be only this:

- a source of reliable hardware information for driver developers, in
real time;
- a marketing tool, intended to show hardware manufacturers that *it
worths* taking into consideration the interests of the expanding Linux
community.

IMHO, "politically", there are very few things more important than the
Linux community having a "single", united voice on this hardware/drivers
matter.

Răzvan

In case it was not obvious from my last message(s), Smolt is not yet in
Debian and thus is not in any official repositories.

Now that lenny is released I plan to look at this again. I believe the
client component of Smolt requires the most love in terms of integration
into the Debian desktop, aesthetically and in the quality of the code.

I don't have enough time to see this through anymore. I also don't think
there is sufficient interest for this within Debian to overcome the
implicit (but correct IMO) "no dial home programs by default" rule.

Good luck to whoever picks this up.

Hi Chris,

do you have the unofficial packaging for smolt still available
somewhere?

Buying new hardware is very frustrating since there's no easy way to
find out if it works or not. I can understand that integrating smolt to
d-i or desktop environment can be difficult. However, I think it could
still have value even if the user has to run it manually from command
line (and toggle a flag somewhere to enable monthly cronjob).

-Timo

I didn't find the time to start packaging this after all. It's a shame
but I'll rather maintain a small number of packages well than try to
package things in a hurry.

Anyways, if somebody else has the time I'm certainly interested in
testing and maybe sponsoring this package.
