firebird2 is the old Firebird 1.5.3 version and it has been renamed to firebird1.5 in 
unstable. The current stable version is Firebird 2.0.1 wich is packaged in firebird2.0
I successfully backported my own php4 packages from sources just changing the dependencies
in debian/control.

Hi,

I am scheduling all firebird1.5 packages from removal. See
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=438855. In short, the
package has security problems and is no longer supported by upstream.

Once the package is removed php5 will no longer build from source.

Attached is a patch that replaces firebird1.5-dev with firebird2.0-dev.
The resulting source package builds on i386.

Note that the patch also adds powerpc, sparc and kfreebsd-* to the list
of php5-interbase architectures (and expands the arch filter in
Build-Depends) now that firebird2.0 is supported on these architectures.

Please apply (minus the NMU-part in changelog which I added just for
clarity).

No, it is not. The fix in 5.2.3-1 is moving from firebird2 to
firebird1.5. This bug, however is about moving from firebird1.5 to
firebird2.0.

2->1.5 is only a name change (fb2 was actually 1.5)
1.5->2.0 is a major upstream change.

firebird1.5 will be removed from the archive, please use firebrid2.0-dev.

This bug is serious for a month now. Please change the two digits in
debian/control. I'd actually do an NMU, but I am not familiar with php
so can't do much testing of the result.

(On the other hand, I really want firebird1.5 out of the archive so I
may take my changes with an NMU).

Right now I'm about to recompile PHP5 using the firebird2.0-dev
package and check the results of the test.
If it all goes fine I'll commit the changes to the SVN repository,
after that it is up to the DD members of the Maintainers Group to
decide when to publish the new package.

firebird1.5 is pending removal from the archive (#438862, #438855).

Currently the only obstacle in the way is that php5 still build-depends
on firebird1.5-dev. (#433736)

I am preparing an NMU for the later, as it is pending for two weeks now
and the patch is in BTS anyway.

firebird1.5 must go away ASAP, if nothing else, to stop wasting security
team time :)

     source package but avoids carrying irrelevant diffs to these files
     in the Debian diff.
   * Now that the testsuite is being run at build time, test failures cause
     a bunch of junk files to be left around in the Debian diff.  So clean up
     several false-positive failures:
     - 052-phpinfo_no_configure.patch: we're patching the output of phpinfo(),
       so patch the test as well
     - fix_broken_upstream_tests.patch: use a local directory for tests that
       use sessions, skip the phpinfo test after all because it doesn't appear
       to be compatible with current testsuite behavior, and disable the
       moneyformat test if en_US locale is not available.
     There are still several other failing tests, but these are not false
     positives and remain enabled pending investigation.
