Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I request an adopter for the kbedic package. The upstream has
obsoleted it and provides an alternative package. Lintian reports the
following errors in the current package:

E: kbedic source: outdated-autotools-helper-file config.guess 2003-07-02
N:
N: The referenced file has a time stamp older than year 2004 and the
N: package does not build-depend on autotools-dev or automake and
N: therefore apparently does not update it. This usually means that the
N: source package will not work correctly on all currently released
N: architectures.
N:
E: kbedic source: outdated-autotools-helper-file config.sub 2003-07-17

Other than that - no other known bugs.

The package description is:
KBE Dictionary is an electronic dictionary with graphical user
interface. It can translate words from English to Bulgarian and from
Bulgarian to English. You can use it to learn English too -- it can
 examine you.
 .
The dictionary databases are not included in this package. You have
 to download bedic-data-4.0.tar.gz from
 http://kbedic.sourceforge.net. Install the files
 bg_en.dat and en_bg.dat in /usr/local/share/bedic.

Hi,

This is quite close to my heart at the moment as I am learning Bulgarian so I wondered if there was still need for adoption or help with this package? Maybe the situation has changed ...

Naturally the other related packages would be of interest too but I'd like to start small and strong :)

Kind regards,

Grant

Many thanks for your interest.

I would say yes; if the RFA bug is open, one can safely assume that.

Here are the Bulgarian-related packages in Debian:

bgoffice -- this is the most important one, needs lots of care
cbedic -- was renamed upstream to cbgoffice
kbedic -- was renamed upstream to kbgoffice
gbgoffice -- only this one is properly maintained, along with
             bgoffice-computer-terms

kbedic/cbedic need to renamed, made to work with dictionaries installed
in multiple paths (like gbgoffice), and moved to main (as
bgoffice-computer-terms is now in Debian). Note that at some point
kbedic should be ported to KDE4, as I anticipate KDE3 will be removed
from Debian, probably in squeeze+1. Upstream hasn't touched it for
years, AFAIK, although he's still reachable and probably willing to help
with small things.

Unfortunately I don't have spare time to lend a hand for the time being,
although I'd wish I could take over bgoffice and cbedic/cbgoffice.

If you have specific questions, don't hesitate to ask on
debian-addons-bg-maintainers@openfmi.net -- the folks who worked and/or
work on this stuff are there.

Hi Yavor,

I appreciate you giving me a useful overview of where these projects are
at and a point of contact. I didn't know about gbgoffice so that is good
to know.

Naturally at these early stages I need to get up to speed with the
Debian package policy. I have grabbed the Debian source for each of
those packages so I can familiarise myself with them too.

There is evidence that kbgoffice is already using QT4 which is handy.
I will check that out in due course.

I see bgoffice has already been orphaned. They look like useful tools
and worth some effort too.

I have issues with cbedic too although I don't know if it is me or not
yet.

So enough to be getting on with. I will start tackling this.

Thanks,

Grant

Grant,

Are you still interested in adopting kbedic. If so (which is the
preferred variant for me), I can offer sponsorship and bulgarian
knowledge when needed, otherwise I'll seek ways to adopting it myself.

Hi George,

Thank you for your offer of sponsership.

Sorry, I have been a bit lazy here. However, I am still interested
in these packages. Since I primarily use GTK based desktops it might
make more sense for a KDE user to take on kbedic. In which case I'll
certainly not stand in anyone's way but I would like to help out
either way.

Thanks for the nudge.

Kind regards,

Grant

Okay, apparently I forgot about kbgoffice [1], which is already based
on qt4. Basically it is kbedic codebase migrated to qt4. Today I sent
a couple diffs to the upstream maintainer which deal with newer
(pickier) compiler. After getting feedback from him, I'll package it,
so we can leave original kbedic rest in piece post-squeeze.

translation)
