I'm on this. It basicallz builds but needs some testing to make
everything working properly. I will upload that to experimental soon.
In parallel I started on looking into 3.4 branch to be able to have that
in Debian shortly after it got released from upstream.

Michael

Hello,
I'd like to know what's the status of Eclipse, in particular for 3.4
version, in Debian.
Europa was released 1 year ago, while Ganymede at June 2008 but Debian
still ships only 3.2.
I saw from SVN weblog[1] some work was done for 3.4, but I see no
upload after that: do you have a version to test? is an upload to
experimental possible, so that we can start use the new version and
give feedback?
Thanks in advance,
Sandro

I'm also very keen on feedback. I have to pass a lesson which is
based on Eclipse 3.4 on behalf of my employer in the beginning of
December. So I have three options:
1. Test a (possibly inofficial) Debian package of 3.4 and perhaps
try to work a little bit on it (but I have nearly zero Java and
Eclipse knowledge - currently)
2. Try to install directly from upstream (which is not helpful for
Debian)
3. Use a Win Laptop with Eclipse 3.4 provided by my employer (uhm ...)
I'd prefer option 1 - but what I really need is some information whether
this is a real option.
Kind regards
Andreas.

Hi Everybody,
im using Ubuntu 8.10 (newest release) and its community packages
contain eclipse 3.2
Actually the newest version is 3.4 and tools like CDT 5.0.1 (c++ IDE)

now there has since two years not been any package update for eclipse
on the ubuntu community packages.
Some people there told me to report here as they say you are
maintaining those packages in debian and they are used then in ubuntu.
Could you please update the eclipse to 3.4?

Hi,
I'm looking forward to have Eclipse 3.4 in Debian (too late for Lenny, but
maybe we could backport it later).
AFAIK, last commit in SVN [0] on this package was in 09/2008 and haven't yet
found a debian/TODO file.
What's current status on this package ?
Which dependency missing ?
Any remaining item ?

I have to admit that I'm very frustrated about the responsibility of the
maintainer, namely the Debian Java Team to bug #432350 and the failure to
even send a single response to the bug report. The consequence that I
have to draw from this fact is that this team either does not have a single
member which is working on Eclipse at all.
If this assumtion is true - I hope at least this can be confirmed by any
member of the team, if not I have to assume that there is no such team at
all - I think we should add more staff to the team. So my first action
now was to subscribe to the list. I never felt competent to do so in the
past because ma Java knowledge is basically zero - but as I said, I have
some packaging experience and if there are some testers I might be helpful.
I also asked to add myself to the alioth project to be able to commit to
the development svn.
I would advise anybody who really intends to be helpful to follow these
two steps.
For the concrete packaging I would at first suggest to clean up the source
packaging. Currently the source tarball contains three zip archives from
completely separate upstream projects. IMHO this is no optimal packaging
strategy and I would start by packaging icu4j and jsch separately and
once this is done create a proper get-upstream-source target for debian/rules
to enable newcomers to drop in by providing a defined state of work.
In case there is some reason to merge separate upstream projects in one
source tarball which might have been introduced by Michael Koch (icu4) and
Vladimir Lapacek (jsch) I would like to hear these reasons and whether they
are valid until today (=with the new Eclipse version).
Kind regards
Andreas.

Hi,
as I announced formerly [1] I intent to push the obviousely completely
stalled maintenance of eclipse package. (I wrote "obviosely" because nobody
of the people mentioned in the changelog issued the slightest sign of interest.)
There was some agreement that the upstream source package should not include
any separate projects and thus I intend to upload libicu4j-java. This mail
is just to inform you about the ITP.

Andreas.

Programming Lang: C, C++, Java
Description : Library for unicode support and internalisation
ICU is a mature, widely used set of C/C++ and Java libraries for
Unicode support, software internationalization and globalization
(i18n/g11n). It grew out of the JDK 1.1 internationalization APIs, which
the ICU team contributed, and the project continues to be developed
for the most advanced Unicode/i18n support. ICU is widely portable and
gives applications the same results on all platforms and between C/C++
and Java software.
Remark: This software is currently provided inside the source package
of eclipse. There is no clear reason why it is tied into another packages
upstream version. Moreover there is a seperate package maintained in
Ubuntu and thus it is simple to "steal" this package. The packaging
stuff is available in SVN via

Is anything happening here?
It's quite embarrassing for Debian to only have such an outdated
version of Eclipse (which is nearly identical to not having it at
all), or no or only very old versions of the major plugins.

Heh, distributions can't feel embarrassment, only people can :P
If *you* feel embarrassed, it is pretty easy to relieve yourself from
this feeling.
Just devote a week (or two) from your life and do what's left to be done :)
As long as nobody has the free time / skills / persistence required
for a decent package
(eclipse is not trivial) there won't be one, it is that simple.
If you decide to help and you are not a debian developer, Andreas
Tille can do the
sponsoring for you and there are a few more resources and help available too.

Package: eclipse
Version: 3.2.2-6.1
Severity: normal
Wouldn't your package from Dec 2008 far better than the current "solution". I think so.
So, please, upload at least that one to experimental.
(You're right, distributions cannot have feelings. But it is still a shame for debian.)
BTW: One thing I don't get is, why that package has that complecity. The only reason in mind is, that it won't work "out of box" with a free java compiler.
If thats the problem, common, move it to non-free. Most users won't care. The ones that care can stick to the two years (!) old version.

I 'm sorry but this is just not possible. We cannot pollute debian
with crap. My package is (at least was) working
and is appropriate for what it was meant to be: a proof of concept and
a demonstration of where the problems
are.
To become uploadable, there are certain things that need to be done to
comply with debian policy. As long
as those things are not completed, the package would be rejected even
if I uploaded it ;)

My package works fine with openjdk so main vs non-free is not a
problem. Some of the problems are:
1) Getting eclipse to build from source in a debian setting from the
command-line and install it in a way
that also allows eclipse's P2 system to work. (A large part of the
complexity is devoted to this).
2) Use debian-packaged versions for the jar dependencies that are also
eclipse (OSGi) compliant.
(My package doesn't solve that).
and the various other problems you see in the launchpad bugtracker of
the eclipse-debian project.
You are welcome to solve these with less complexity. If you manage to
do this, the nice folks in the
linux-distros project in upstream eclipse.org will more than welcome
your contributions :)
Cheers,
Pantelis
