I can reproduce this problem with the regular xpdf package as well. I cannot
reproduce it with a version built from source. This may indicate that the
real problem is in t1lib0's shlibs.

Thanks Ray. I noticed something a bit odd with t1lib0's shlibs at the time;
despite the fact that it's version 0.9.1, the shlibs file only
says >= 0.90-0. Yet the source would not compile with t1lib 0.90,
which was all I could find pre-compiled for potato (the i386
is the only architecture where t1lib0 is behind!)

Message #15 received at 43215@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
The shlibs file for t1lib0 says >= 0.9-0 is required, even for
version 0.9.1-3. Binaries compiled with 0.9.1-3 (eg xpdf, which
will not compile with 0.90) do not work when run with 0.9.
Thanks
