--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

projectM is a reimplementation of Milkdrop under GNU/Linux and Mac OS X
utilising OpenGL instead of Direct3D, which restricted Milkdrop to one
operating system and even application: Windows and Winamp. It (and
Milkdrop) is perhaps the highest quality and most intricate audio
visualisation software and Debian would benefit immensely to have it
included in the libvisual-plugins package, especially as that would
allow for Amarok users (among others) to use the plugin immediately
without having to compile from source which is an intimidating process
for many new users (a lot of whom from personal experience love projectM
and see it as a huge incentive to not use iTunes and the proprietary
operating systems it runs on).

The projectM website is here: http://xmms-projectm.sourceforge.net/

Please update the package to include projectM!

[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
It's not quite that easy. The libvisual projectm visualization depends
on libprojectm which is not part of Debian and even if it were, we'd
have to hack up the libvisual-plugins package even more to add
libvisual-projectm to it.

It would make more sense to wait for the Ubuntu guys to get libprojectm
& libvisual-projectm into their repositories. Alternatively someone
could take their attempted source packaging and fix/tidy it up and
import it into Debian. :)

libvisual-projectm (depends on libprojectm)
http://revu.tauware.de/details.py?upid=5447

Maybe once libvisual-projectm is in Debian we could add a recommend on
it to libvisual-plugins.

Subject: 3 final packages or 2?

So what would be the best way to go about it? Should there be a
separate libprojectm package, and the libvisual-projectm visualisation
be integrated into the libvisual-plugins package? If so,
libvisual-plugins would have to be updated to not only include
libvisual-projectm, but also depend on the separate libprojectm package.

I'm pretty sure it would be suboptimal to have separate libprojectm,
libvisual-projectm, and libvisual-plugins packages. The latter two I
would think should be merged together in libvisual-plugins and depend on
libprojectm. Is there any reason this approach should be shied away
from in favour of three separate packages?

if libvisual-projectm & libvisual-plugins packages were merged into
one... then that would require someone making a source tarball with them
pre-merged. i doubt anyone is willing to maintain that?

keeping them separate makes them easier for people to bother maintaining
in the future.
