Message #5 received at submit@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
Package: lib32asound2
Version: 1.0.14a-1
Severity: normal
After upgrading to 1.0.14a-1 of lib32asound2 (from 1.0.13-2, stable), all my 32
bit apps failed when trying to use alsa, with messages similar to these:
alsa-init: using device default
alsa-lib: pcm.c:2106:(snd_pcm_open_conf) Cannot open shared library /usr/lib/alsa-lib/libasound_module_pcm_empty.so
alsa-init: playback open error: No such file or directory
downgrading to the stable version (and changing nothing else) fixes it,
upgrading brings the problem back.
I have no .asoundrc or any other alsa customisation on this system.

Have a look at [0], then reboot, choose your favourite songs and
close this bug then ;)

BTW, its very painful to reply to your mail as you put the whole mail
below the signature, which is stripped by most e-mail programs when
replying so I had to manually paste the mail.

I do not understand that. I read through [0], but neither was asound in use nor
do I use amorok nor was anything running that used alsa.
If a reboot fixes things even when libasound is not in use, that is a bad
sign (what to do with servers? reboot them).
In any case, a rbeoot does not have any effect on the problem, it is still
persisting with the newer version of libasound.

This file isn't either generated nor installed by an alsa package.
You can verify it by:
$ apt-file update; apt-file search alsa-lib/libasound_module_pcm_empty.so

Well dashdashblank is used by the Debian control bug server. It
simply tells that the instructions are stoped here. It shouldn't be
painful, though

You're right! Please close all sound apps and running daemons (arts,
esd, jack) and do an
# rm -rf /usr/lib/alsa-lib/libasound_module_pcm_empty.so; apt-get update; dpkg --purge --force -all lib32asound2; apt-get install -f
and report the results here.
Thanks for cooperation

Plesae donn't configure your card with alsaconf!
Do as follows:
# dpkg --purge --force-all alsa-utils alsa-oss alsa-base libasound2 linux-sound-base
# apt-get install alsa-utils alsa-base libasound2
Enjoy sound without configuring the card with alsaconf. udev does
the trick for you.

Hmm, check out the many free flashplayers and plugins like gnash,
libflash-mozplugin, mozilla-plugin-gnash. I guess the Adobe player
can't handle alsa 1.0.14, though. As you can here music with any
other application than flashplugin-nonfree we should close this bug?
