Package: slash
Severity: serious
Version: 2.2.6-8
Hi there!
Due to the recent removal of apache (including it's accompanied
packages of apache-common, apache-dbg, apache-dev, apache-doc,
apache-perl and apache-ssl) and libapache-mod-perl your package most
propably isn't able to get installed or built anymore. These are the
problems your package currently has:
slash (build-dependency): libapache-mod-perl
slash (dependency): apache |apache-perl |apache-ssl
slash (dependency): apache-dev
slash (dependency): libapache-mod-perl
Please either send the ftp team a removal request for your package if
it isn't able to work with apache2, or update it to build (only)
packages for apache2.
Thanks in advance,

The problem is well known, but unfortunately not trivial.
Slash out of the box doesn't work with 2.x Apaches. Slashdot itself
still runs Apache 1.3. See also this discussion at
http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_name=1180528679.21189.1192504357%40webmail.messagingengine.com&forum_name=slashcode-general
But there is an inofficial patch for the current "stable" version
2.2.6 from 2004 (see
http://www.slashcode.com/articles/04/02/19/2144259.shtml and
http://www.crackerjack.net/slash-2.2.6-modperl2.diff.txt) for Apache
2.0.
Since I plan to evaluate that patch for the Slashsite I run, I also
already planned to try to update the package to work with Apache 2.x.
No promises, but at least a personal urge to get that damned thing
working with Apache 2.x. :-)
Much more speculative is though if the current developement version
can be made run with Apache 2.x. (But as long as it's brandmarked
"stable" it should be ok for Debian Stable, shouldn't it? :-)

reassign 429071 ftp.debian.org
retitle 429071 RM: slash -- RoQA; RC-buggy; FTBFS, uninstallable, low popcon
thanks
With more RC bugs than users in popcon, still needing apache 1.3,
I think slash is ripe for removal.

I agree.
Slashdot.org itself still runs on Apache 1.3. There were no official
stable Slash releases since years either and the ML is very low
traffic.
I may start packaging again, if they support Apache 2.2 officially or
I find a maintainable way to get Apache 2.2 support, but for now a
removal seems to be the best way.

Message #43 received at 429071-close@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
We believe that the bug you reported is now fixed; the following
package(s) have been removed from unstable:
slash | 2.2.6-8 | source, alpha, amd64, arm, hppa, i386, ia64, m68k, mips, mipsel, powerpc, s390, sparc
Note that the package(s) have simply been removed from the tag
database and may (or may not) still be in the pool; this is not a bug.
The package(s) will be physically removed automatically when no suite
references them (and in the case of source, when no binary references
it). Please also remember that the changes have been done on the
master archive (ftp-master.debian.org) and will not propagate to any
mirrors (ftp.debian.org included) until the next cron.daily run at the
earliest.
Packages are never removed from testing by hand. Testing tracks
unstable and will automatically remove packages which were removed
from unstable when removing them from testing causes no dependency
problems.
Bugs which have been reported against this package are not automatically
removed from the Bug Tracking System. Please check all open bugs and
close them or re-assign them to another package if the removed package
was superseded by another one.
Thank you for reporting the bug, which will now be closed. If you
have further comments please address them to 429071@bugs.debian.org.
