Package: icedove
Version: 2.0.0.0-3
Severity: important
After upgrading from a 1.5 series all my sattings and mailboxes
are lost. More precisely, it lokks like icedove chooses the right
profile, but is unable to load both settings and mailboxes.
Furthermore, selecting Preferences from the menu does nothing
Error console reports lots of errors (attached below)

which upgrade path did you go did you directly upgrade from 1.5 to
2.0.0.0-3 ... or any intermediate steps?

thanks
I'm experiencing the same bug. May complete settings and mailboxes are
lost. After icedove has started, may mailboxes are gone and also missing
from "Edit-> Account Settings"
This is definitely a grave bug, so I'm raising the severity.
Besides, the nice icedove icons seems to have vanished.
Cheers,
Michael

We see this issue too, debian sid, in sidux.
The problem is trivial to fix if you know beforehand it's going to happen:
1. rename your .mozilla-thunderbird directory in ~/
2. apt-get install icedove
3. open icedove 2.0 (the email client will be empty of any user data)
4. close icedove 2.0
5. copy over the CONTENTS of the old .mozilla-thunderbird directory into
the newly created one.
6. open icedove 2.0 again.
Email and settings are restored.
If you have already apparently lost your data, don't worry, it's not
gone, just do this, after enabling testing sources in /etc/apt/sources.list
1. apt-get remove --purge icedove
2. apt-get install -t testing icedove (this should restore 1.5.x for
now, at least while it's in testing)
3. open icedove, your stuff should be back to normal
4. close icedove
5. do the above 6 steps, and it will work fine.

Message #30 received at 425390@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
The guy who came up with the 1-6 fix reports that he discovered that fix
running the tarball version of thunderbird 2.0 a few weeks ago, so it
looks like this is not a Debian packaging issue, but was in the original
thunderbird package from the beginning. That's when he discovered the
fix, copying the directory to elsewhere, then copying the contents back
into the newly created 2.0 directory, which should theoretically make no
difference at all, since it's the same directory name, with the same
contents, but it does make a difference, I had it happen to me today too
with the new icedove, and our users reported this issue as well:
http://sidux.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&p=30224#30224
Hope it can get resolved even if it's not a Debian Icedove issue, since
the fix is hardly intuitive or user friendly.

Just wanted to report that the solution suggested above (steps 1-6)
worked for me.
I also had installed the tarball before, but then went back to
the 1.5 deb (mostly because some extensions didn't work).
But I'm quite sure I backed up my ~/.mozilla-thunderbird before
installing the tarball, and restored it afterwards *shrugs*
thanks,

Package: icedove
Version: 2.0.0.0-3
Followup-For: Bug #425390
I am not able to create a new profile with a new user account with 2.0.0.0-3.
The normal behavior on first startup of icedove would be:
- (Dialog) ask for importing other setups
- (Dialog, if no setup) create new profile dialog
- Main window with the new created account apears
- useful ~/.mozilla-thunderbird folder with the settings and the new profile is created
The actual behavior is
- (Dialog) ask for importing other setups. I do not have one so I enter no
- The main application window opens without any mail folder
- preferences does not work
- account preferences are empty (and still are if you try to create a new profile in this dialog field
- there is a new ~/.mozilla-thunderbird folder but it is not interpreted when starting icedove again (I do not know if there are useful settings in the folder - did not test it)

I managed to make Icedove 2.0 work with my old profile following the 6
steps.
Nevertheless, I had to remove the enigmail package because it is not
supported by 2.0 version. Icedove stays blocked while trying to find
update for Enigmail (maybe it's due to permission problems, don't check
this). Putting enigmail in conflict could be a good idea.
After importing my old profile, I wasn't able to create a new compose
window, I don't know why. If I have the time, I will take a closer look
to this issue tomorrow, looking to other recent bugs seems to give some
hints about possible reasons.

Hung originally checking the "Menu Editor" extension.
I purged icedove.
Installed the old version from "pool" using dpkg, ran old icedove once.
Purged the old version.
Installed the new.
Ran icedove, it updated a load of plugins for me correctly this time.
Looks like it is working as expected, but I need to go find sort
Enigmail and GNOME support again, as they were from packages, and got
removed on the purge.
Some loss of styling happened in this process, I assume because the
graphics are all updated, and so new themes will be required for styling.

but the workaround is giving me grief.
I've can reproducibly revert to 1.5 but all attempts to then follow the steps to install 2.0 through up a popup saying something to the effect that another version of icedove is running, kill it or restart your system. There's nothing to kill, a new x zsession doesn't work, a reboot doesn't work. I can find no .pid file lurking.

It doesn't check PID it just checks for the presence of .mozilla-thunderbird/default/lock sym. link. Remove it and restart
the icedove. I have no idea why they would create a link with PID info and not even check if it's a stale one due to
the process not being there anymore...

the 6 steps do not work for me, instead I remove the extensions related

Package: icedove
Version: 2.0.0.0-3
Followup-For: Bug #425390
It looks like something is wrong when Icedove starts.
I started icedove with the following command:
icedove -ProfileManager -jsconsole
and these were shown in the Error Console:
Error: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x8000ffff
(NS_ERROR_UNEXPECTED) [nsIPrefBranch.getBoolPref]" nsresult:
"0x8000ffff (NS_ERROR_UNEXPECTED)" location: "JS frame ::
file:///usr/lib/icedove/components/offlineStartup.js :: anonymous ::
line 79" data: no]
Source File: file:///usr/lib/icedove/components/offlineStartup.js
Line: 79
Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... "Component returned failure

Hope this helps. Oh, by the way. Tried to downgrade to icedove
1.5.0.10.dfsg1-3 to check if the mailboxes are ok and all I got
is a segmentation fault. Tried to run gdb and got this:
Core was generated by `/usr/lib/icedove/icedove-bin'.
Program terminated with signal 11, Segmentation fault.
#0 0xb7dc6f0c in raise () from /lib/libpthread.so.0
Is this that kind of error that should never appear? Please help me
to help you. If you need the core, I'll put it online.
Thanks,
Igor
