I've been using dpatch successfully in one my packages via
include /usr/share/dpatch/dpatch.make
in debian/rules.

Unfortunately since some time, the invocation of the patch/unpatch
target fails with the following message:

dpatch  deapply-all  
set: 8: Illegal option -o pipefail
make: *** [unpatch] Error 2

The following is a minimal transcript:

| dash
| $ dpatch --help
| set: 8: Illegal option -o pipefail
| $ sed -n '1p;8p' /usr/bin/dpatch
| #! /bin/sh
| set -o pipefail

One of the two lines from dpatch shown above must be changed, per 10.4
of the Policy manual from debian-policy=3.7.2.2:

|    Thus, shell scripts specifying `/bin/sh' as interpreter must only
| use POSIX features.  If a script requires non-POSIX features from
| the shell interpreter, the appropriate shell must be specified in
| the first line of the script (e.g., `#!/bin/bash') and the package
| must depend on the package providing the shell (unless the shell
| package is marked "Essential", as in the case of `bash').

   * specify dpatch command to use bash, to use 'set -o pipefail', for
     users who are using dash as their /bin/sh.
