Severity: wishlist
* Package name : ttf-liberation
Version : 0.1
Upstream Authors : Red Hat Inc.
* URL : https://www.redhat.com/promo/fonts/
* License : GPL V2
* Description : An initial version of a set of serif, sans-serif and

Hi Alan,
I have gone ahead and made a Debian package for this font set. I certainly do
not want to step on your toes since you opened the ITP. You can use my
package as an example if you would like. Or, if you would rather, I can try
to get a sponsor for the package as is with me as the maintainer.
You can see the packages at:
http://www.rubixlinux.org/debian/ttf-liberation/
Thank you,
Joshua Rubin

Hi,
I've already made the package:
http://technotux.org/dload/ttf-liberation/ (~ 10 days ago), but there is a
license problem with these fonts that prevents us to upload it.

Hi Alan,
I saw that the license is "gpl+exception" what is it about the exception that
makes it DFSG non uploadable.
Thanks,

Have these issues been raised with Red Hat/the copyright holders? Have
they indicated that they will (or won't) clarify the points that make it
non-distributable?

Have those issues been communicated to upstream and what is their reaction?
The ITP includes the same question, in June, but no answer yet.

(I couldn't find a permanent URI for that post, but it contains an offer to
discuss any issues with interested parties and Red Hat's legal department.)
Alternatively, I would suggest raising it with the FSF, or the SFLC.
I hope this can be sorted out sooner rather than later as it seems to be
blocking progress on this package.

Message #69 received at 423503@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
Hello,
I've spent some time on the Liberation font license mess [1], here are
my results. Red Hat's Tom Callaway (who is responsible for dealing
with such licensing issues) stated that according to the FSF the
license was "free but GPL-incompatible" [2]. I contacted the FSF to
further clarify on the alleged contradiction in the terms. The reply I
got says that the FSF considers this to be a valid license:
'We believe it would have been far clearer if Red Hat had created,
say, the "Liberation Font License" with their extra conditions.
However, since they are the copyright holders, they are within their
rights to do it the way they did.'
This should make this license acceptable for Debian, right?
Best regards,
Hendrik Weimer

Hi Alan,
I think the bug log has gathered all relevant information but just isn't
conclusive on either one. I therefore suggest to just upload the package
to unstable and have the FTP-masters decide on this - is this acceptable
to Debian or not? That is, follow the reasoning by FSF or the one by some
of the debian-legal participants? After all, FTP-master is the final
authority on this.
Do you think you can upload it sometime soon, so it may make it to Lenny?
If you need sponsoring just let me know!
