Subject: typo3: mod_rewrite - problem: internal server error
Date: Fri, 27 Apr 2007 09:23:41 +0200
Package: typo3
Version: 4.0.2+debian-3
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

After installing typo3 via aptitude I get in my browser:

Internal Server Error

The logfile says:
mod_rewrite: maximum number of internal redirects reached. Assuming configuration error. Use
"RewriteOptions MaxRedirects" to increase the limit if neccessary.

But this seems not to be the problem, which I assume is a loop in the redirects.

Subject: Can reproduce

[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Hi,

I can reproduce this bug. Versions of further packages which may be relevant:

apache 1.3.34-4.1
libapache-mod-php4	6:4.4.4-8+etch-4

I fixed this bug by commenting out the bottom-most RewriteRule in
typo3-dummy.conf (RewriteRule .* /typo3/index.php [L]). Despite the [L] at
the end, this line seemed to cause infinite recursion:

[Tue Sep 25 14:24:32 2007] [debug] mod_rewrite.c(1643): [client x]
mod_rewrite's internal redirect status: 0/10
.
[Tue Sep 25 14:24:32 2007] [debug] mod_rewrite.c(1643): [client x]
mod_rewrite's internal redirect status: 1/10
.
[Tue Sep 25 14:24:32 2007] [debug] mod_rewrite.c(1643): [client x]
mod_rewrite's internal redirect status: 2/10
.
[Tue Sep 25 14:24:32 2007] [debug] mod_rewrite.c(1643): [client x]
mod_rewrite's internal redirect status: 3/10
.
[...]

I don't understand whether this RedirectRule actually serves an important
purpose, however. Here, the system seems to work fine, without it.

I ran into a number of further issues, which I will report in a while.

Hi,

I get the same error after activating the rewrite.load module in apache2 (make
symlink rewrite.load from /etc/apache2/mods_available
to /etc/apache2/mods_enabled).

The quick an perhaps dirty solution was to remark the
line "Rewrite .* /typ3/index.php [L]" in /etc/apache2/conf.d/typo3-dummy.conf
as described in the bugreport.

On a fresh debian install, this modules in not enabled inside apache2, so
there could be nor error.

Hi,

I can confirm this error message with the latest lenny package version.
I also had to amend the last line "Rewrite .* /typ3/index.php [L]" which
produced the error. After I changed the line to rewrite only PHP and
PDF-Files I still have the problem that PDF-Downloads don't work and the
Backend seems to be broken.

Btw. I did a fresh debian installation.

Rgds,

Did you move the typo3 installation from http://server/typo3 http://server/ ?
What i mean... did you change the document root of the webserver?

No I didn't with the first try. After looking at the original rewrite rules within in the src file I amended your configuration, but also moved directory typo3 to the root dir. That's what is working for me:

    ### Begin: Rewrite stuff ###
    <IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
        # Enable URL rewriting
        RewriteEngine On
        RewriteBase /
        # Stop rewrite processing if we are in the typo3/ directory
        RewriteRule ^(typo3|t3lib|tslib|fileadmin|typo3conf|typo3temp|uploads|showpic\.php|favicon\.ico)/ - [L]
        # Redirect http://mysite/typo3 to http://mysite/typo3/index_re.php
        # and stop the rewrite processing
        RewriteRule ^/typo3$ /var/lib/typo3-dummy/typo3/index_re.php [L]
        # If the file/symlink/directory does not exist => Redirect to index.php
        # Important note: If you copy/paste this into httpd.conf instead
        # of .htaccess you will need to add '%{DOCUMENT_ROOT}' left to each
        # '%{REQUEST_FILENAME}' part.
        RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
        RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
        RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-l
        # Main URL rewriting.
        # If you use Windows and SimulateStaticDocuments do not work, try adding a
        # slash (/) right before 'index.php' below.
        # The example shows how to rewrite only *.html and *.pdf files to index.php
        # This may be helpful when using an extension that can generate PDF files
        # on the fly.
        # Example: RewriteRule .*\.(html|pdf)$ index.php [L]
        # For httpd.conf, use this line instead of the next one that has no '#':
        RewriteRule .* /var/lib/typo3-dummy/index.php [L]
        ### End: Rewrite stuff ###

Hi,

I can also confirm this with the lenny packages on etch.

For me it helped to change
