A backtrace of an unstripped binary would be the greatest thing, if
possible.

I'm also getting the same error described in this bug, using Debian Etch with
all packages up to date. I recompiled (from the Debian source package)
without stripping symbols from the binaries and am attaching three files.
* aide-gdb_backtrace.txt is a script session of running the binary in gdb and
issuing a backtrace. It seems gdb was having trouble with this, but
hopefully it's close enough to be useful.
* aide-strace.txt is the output from running aide by way of strace.
* aide-V255.txt is the output when running aide with it's highest verbosity.
I hope this helps and should be able to assist any other troubleshooting you
may need to resolve this.

According to the -V255 out the segfault occurs in close_md() from md.c.
The gdb backtrace suggests the problem is with mhash_deinit() for
MHASH_WHIRLPOOL. Since aide has already scanned several files, I suspect
a problem with libmhash. Try taking the whirlpool hash out of the group
definitions. If the problem goes away it might be related to that hash only.

Just as I suspected: an issue with whirlpool in libmhash on Sparc.
Thanks for clearing that up.

Disabling the whirlpool hash in my aide.conf allows AIDE to proceed without

Can you try disabling the whirlpool hash and retry?
aide upstream suspects that this is mhash bug #1721000:

We have tracked this down to an issue with the whirlpool hash on
sparc64, which can be worked around by disabling the whirlpool hash in
aide configuration.
This might be a known mhash upstream bug (#1721000,
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1721000&group_id=4286&atid=104286)
which should be addressed in Debian as well.

Does whirlpool still crash your aide on sparc64?

I haven't tried it in quite some time. I disabled it when I found it was the
source of the problem and haven't really looked back.
I'm still using Debian Etch/Sparc64 on that machine, with libmhash2=0.9.7-1
and aide=0.13.1-2. Since the versions haven't changed, I'm assuming the
problem hasn't gone away. Are you trying to identify if just re-enabling it
will work now for some other reason? Or are you trying to see if it works in
Lenny?

Most probably.

I would like to see whether mhash 0.9.9 in lenny might have fixed the
issue.

I wasn't going to be upgrading this machine to Lenny since it's being replaced
instead soon. When I take it offline, I'll upgrade it and test. It should
only be another week or so I expect.

For what it's worth, I haven't forgotten, but I haven't made the same progress
as I expected either. I promise when I do finally decomission that server, I
will get back to you. Hopefully, it won't be more than another week or two
now, but some setbacks have unfortunately delayed my response.

The machine is upgraded to Lenny now. The installed AIDE version is the
latest in the repository: 0.13.1-10. The configuration is unmodified by me.
Running aideinit seems to have the same output as it used to.
aideinit.txt - just output from running "aideinit -y"
strace_aideinit.txt - output from running "strace aideinit -y"
gdb_aide.txt - gdb session and backtrace script
This machine is now essentially unused, so I can make it available for any
testing you want. Let me know what I can do to help.

Oh, well, then the bug is actually still unfixed. I apologize for the
extra work.

There is a possible patch in the sourceforge tracker
(http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1721000&group_id=4286&atid=104286),
but given that this was filed in 2007 and has not been commented on by
the maintainers, I don't think that it makes much sense in patching
and compiling the "current" mhash upstream version (which is one year
old and has not yet found its way into Debian) on Debian lenny and
trying out whether the issue is still there. There seems nobody left
caring about mhash anyway :-(
I'm going to let this bug rot away in the BTS until somebody wakes up,
and I would suggest that you retire the box.
Greetings
Marc

This is Debian Bug #420547, an ancient issue about aide segfaulting on
SPARC architectures if the whirlpool hash is enabled.

mhash claims that the issue was fixed back in 2012. Can you please try
current aide on a sparc system, enabling whirlpool? You enable whirlpool
by adding "+whirlpool" ot the Checksums line in aide.conf.
Does aide runin that situation?
I do fully understand that you might not be willing to try this after
waiting for a decade or do not have sparc systems available any more.
Also, sparc is no longer a release architecture in Debian.
I will therefore close this issue by the end of 2017 if no reports come
in that the bug still applies.
Greetings
Marc
