Message #5 received at submit@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
Package: hostname
Version: 2.93
Severity: normal
When attempting to use "hostname -f" or "hostname --fqdn" to determine the fully
qualified domain name of the system, it returns:
hostname: Unknown host
This same syntax worked as expected in the hostname package in Debian Sarge.
This causes problems with the amavisd-new package, because it has a line in one
of its configuration files as follows:
chomp($myhostname = `hostname --fqdn`);
-- System Information:
Debian Release: 4.0

Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8)
Versions of packages hostname depends on:

The only way I can reproduce this is by having a FQDN in /etc/hostname . Can
you please check if your /etc/hostname has your FQDN instead of just the
hostname?
As you can see in hostname's man page,
"/etc/hostname This file should only contain domain name and not the full
FQDN."
Anyway, and if this is your case, I still think that this bug report shouldn't
be closed but retitled to "hostname should check if /etc/hostname has FQDN",
or "hostname should have better behaviour with invalid /etc/hostname", and
the severity changed to "wishlist".
Best regards,
