Subject: kmail: overwrites changes to contacts on NFS shares at exit
Date: Tue, 27 Mar 2007 11:00:14 +0200 (CEST)
Package: kmail
Version: 4:3.5.6.dfsg.1-1
Severity: grave
Justification: causes non-critical data loss

KMail writes the address book file at every shutdown, overwriting any
changes that may have happened in between. I can reproduce it every
time with an address book located on an NFS share. It does not occur
with the local address book.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Start kmail.
2. Start kaddressbook.
3. Modify some contact in the address book.
4. Close the address book.
5. Exit kmail.

Now open kaddressbook again and check that the changes have been lost.

Perhaps it is a locking issue...

Hi All,

I've the same problem on my box. I use Kmail 4:3.5.5.dfsg.1-6 on a ext3 fs.
The steps to reproduce the bug are the same on my system.

thanks

Here's another nice way to reproduce it: Make sure your remote address book is
not reachable when KMail starts. Then make it available, and exit KMail.
KMail will then overwrite the address book with an empty one. All your
contacts are lost.

Note that this isn't NFS-specific, I have seen this (in earlier versions) with
a remote addressbook on an SSH server (the fish:// protocol IIRC).

Hi!

If I read tihs correctly, it is only happening when you have set your
addressbook to either nfs:/ or fish:/ (or maybe some other network kio slave
protocol), right ?

Please specify exactly the places where you define this.

This will be fixed when kde3.5.7 gets to unstable. kde3.5.7 has disabled the
ability to have your addressbook on that kind of resources.

I'm not sure it's that simple. In the NFS case, the contacts are not in a
remote resource from KDE:s point of view, since they appear in a mounted
directory in the file system.

It's very likely that the problem can be reproduced with other types of file
systems.

(It would be preferable if they could fix bugs properly instead of disabling
functionality.)

I think libkabc (which handles the addressbook directly) uses either fam or
gamin to watch for changed files. When either kaddressbook or kmail changes
something, it uses libkabc and I think libkabc calls back to the other
program to tell that it should reread the file.

Do you use libfam or libgamin on yoru system? Have you configured it to work
across nfs? from some quick googling there might be some configuratins needed
in order to have gamin and/or fam to work with nfs shares.

> It's very likely that the problem can be reproduced with other types of

I actually don't think so. I have really tried to be evil to kaddressbook and
kmail and the addressbooks without any success.

> (It would be preferable if they could fix bugs properly instead of

To fix it in kde3.5 it requires a major libkabc rewrite - that will not be
done for kde3.5 - but in kde4 it is a part of akonadi which should fix this.

Sounds fine. What I don't understand is why KMail would, in any circumstances,
cause the address book to be written back, since I didn't modify any contacts
with KMail.

> Do you use libfam or libgamin on yoru system?

Yes, gamin.

> Have you configured it to work across nfs?

I haven't found anything that indicates that it has to be configured for nfs.
(If so, then that should really be documented.) The example config file has a
line that sets it to polling mode for NFS, but it doesn't say if that is
necessary.

Apparently KMail doesn't detect changes made in KAddressbook to the contacts
on NFS. Enabling polling mode didn't help, but with local filesystems KMail
picks up the changes immediately. So there seems to be a problem with gamin.

I just had an opportunity to catch KMail writing my address book red-handed,
see the attached screenshot. This happened because I was apparently hit by
#406984 simultaneously, so KMail displayed a "disk full" dialog and hung,
leaving the file copying dialog frozen.

Moreover I got the following messages from KMail on the console when
restarting it after the crash:

Weaver dtor: destroying inventory.
WeaverThreadLogger: thread (ID: 1) destroyed.
WeaverThreadLogger: thread (ID: 2) destroyed.
WeaverThreadLogger: thread (ID: 3) destroyed.

locked by the progra. If you think this is in error, remove the lock file

kmail: ERROR: Cannot save the resource "Local address book" because it is

This proves that KMail is trying to _write_ the local address book as well.
Why would it do that? But apparently file locking works here. This seems to
point to a locking problem with NFS perhaps.

I have found out why gamin cannot monitor the status of files on the NFS
shares in polling mode. It simply has no permissions to access those files.
That's fine... Although I'm not sure why it doesn't work with inotify.

Umm, no. The address book in question is _not_ on a remote kioslave, but on a
file in the file system, /mnt/nfs/slug/contacts/adressbook.vcf, which happens
to be on an NFS mount. So this makes absolutely no difference.

Please fix your fam/gamin to actually work then. libkabc relies on this to
work properly.

You noticed yourself in a earlier mail that it was your gamin that can't
monitor your files.

I consider this issue fixed.

From Outlook Express 4.2 you never have to save the RW cache for unmounting a
directory of the TCP/IP tool.
