Hi,
I just got the HP Officejet J4780. It does not work with
the currently packaged hplip (so the severity to 'normal'),
so I try to make a new package from the latest release.
I try to change as little as possible your packaging.
I'm not sure I really succeed (python files are in hplip-data
instead of hplip, ...)
I'm sure there is some upgrading issue to take care
But I got a working package that allows me to use my printer
(printing and scanning at least)
For anyone interested, you can find all of this here:
http://www-id.imag.fr/~danjean/deb.html#hplip
I do not plan to correct this package or to improve it.
But feel free to add remarks (if any) to this bug report
so that the maintainer can use them if he wants to.
Best regards,
Vincent

Message #22 received at 413225@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
Hi,
Attention everyone who has expressed an interest in getting a newer
HPLIP into Debian.
I have built, installed, and done some basic testing (except for faxing)
of this Ubuntu HPLIP package[1] on an up to date sid box. It seems to
be working OK.
It would be great if you could find the time to do the same and report
back to: pkg-hpijs-devel@lists.alioth.debian.org
In the meantime (and working under the assumption there are no serious
issues), I am going to determine which bugs would be closed if it was
uploaded, start working on the Ubuntu->Debian changes, and see if I can
figure out how to get it into the Alioth pgk-hpijs CVS repository[2]
(although I most certainly would not complain if someone who already
knows how was to go ahead and check it in ;).
These are the packages it builds:
hpijs-ppds_2.7.7+2.7.7-0ubuntu4_all.deb
hpijs_2.7.7+2.7.7-0ubuntu4_i386.deb
hplip-data_2.7.7-0ubuntu4_all.deb
hplip-dbg_2.7.7-0ubuntu4_i386.deb
hplip-doc_2.7.7-0ubuntu4_all.deb
hplip-firmware_2.7.7-0ubuntu4_all.deb
hplip_2.7.7-0ubuntu4_i386.deb
Hoping to hear from you soon,
- Bruce

Dear hplip-maintainers,
could you please at least *answer* to this request?
Are you going to package the new version? If 'Yes', soon or later?
Or have you lost interest in this package? Do you need more time, help,
testers?
Thank you for your effort!
Cheers,
Fabian

I have asked for new maintainers sometime ago, and some people showed up.
As far as I know, they are working on a new package. I will let them answer
you about when it will be ready, as I don't know that.

[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Submitters,
You have in the past requested an upgrade of hplip in Debian.
I'm happy to report that we have now shadowed the hplip
package from ubuntu and built a version for sid, which has been uploaded
to the Debian experimental distribution, as shown below. However
this package needs to go through NEW processing as it also contains the
new package hplip-gui.
I have in the meantime uploaded the package to
http://people.debian.org/~msp.
I have tested here with a PSC1315 and all seems ok, but before we upload
to the unstable distribution I would like to get some further testing.
Could I ask you to install the package from experimental/ people.d.o and
report back your findings.
Thanks,
Mark

I just installed this version because it's needed to get my new HP
Officejet J5700 going. I can confirm that it's working (at least
scanning is; I haven't tried printing yet).

"Note: HPLIP is free, open source software distributed under the MIT,
BSD, and GPL licenses. HP does not provide formal consumer or commercial
support for this software."
Unfortunately, this statement is incorrect as of 2.7.10.
hplip/hpijs since 2.7.10 is not open software anymore.
It downloads binary libraries and firmware automatically.

Can you provide some further details on this issue?
Ie which parts of hplip are not free?
