Subject: blender -w doesn't work (not a regular decorated window)
Date: Wed, 14 Feb 2007 11:46:17 +0100
Package: blender
Version: 2.42a-5
Severity: normal

Hi,

I'm trying to run blender within a regular window (blender -w) but it
still uses a fullscreen undecorated window. So it's a pain to deal with
multiple windows on a big screen.

Thanks,
	Xav

Hi and thanks for your report,

unfortunately, I lack some pieces of information, particularly: which
Desktop Environment/Window Manager are you using?

I tried with the following, on an etch/i386 box:
 - default GNOME:
    - without switch: undecorated, takes the whole screen but the
panels (`fake' fullscreen, within GNOME, if one can call it that
	  way).
	- with -w switch: does what it is supposed to do.
 - default Xfce:
    - without switch: `real' fullscreen.
	- with -w switch: does what it is supposed to do.

And I don't have enough disk space on my test box to think about
installing KDE. ;-)

Cheers,

Ah, I see. I'm using beryl packages from beryl.org. I'll try with
metacity when I'm back at my computer (but I really prefer working with
beryl).

Well, if you confirm that everything works as expected with another WM,
I'll downgrade this bug to minor or wishlist, and change the bug title
to something more explicit about beryl being affected only, since
there's no Debian package for beryl* to reassign this bugreport to.

Another interesting thing would be to know which version of beryl you're
using, since there are some bugs in beryl's bug tracker that look like
this one, see e.g. http://bugs.beryl-project.org/ticket/1333

I'm using beryl 0.1.9999.2~0beryl1 (apparently it's 0.2.0rc2).

I confirm it works well with Metacity - and apparently it fails with
Compiz too, see http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=411141

Thanks for your confirmation. As one can see above, I've applied what I
proposed in a former reply. If needed, again a link to beryl's BTS:

  http://bugs.beryl-project.org/ticket/1333

I would appreciate if you could drop me a note once that problem is
fixed, so that I can close this bugreport accordingly.

Hi!

I get the same error (no borders possible) when using Wmii as windowmanager. Dwm works
fine though.

I use an Nvidia 8600GT with proprietary drivers (169.12).

If possible, for tiling windowmanagers like these borders should be
enabled by default.

Hi,

Sorry, I found Blender can be run windowed in Wmii. However it always
starts in floating space (which is for apps like Gimp for example).
It should start in tiling space.
I have similar problems with other applications:
Tvtime sometimes starts in fullscreen without me wanting that.
Xfmedia won't display videos always and I have to switch to Wmii-fullscreen-mode
(mod+f) which sometimes works but most of the time I can only watch
videos in fullscreen mode (http://preview.tinyurl.com/5f6jsf).

It very looks like the WM is at fault. Either it is by design that it
implements it this way (through a default configuration in this or that
case), or it is ignoring some parts of the ICCCM standards, etc.

For that particular point (fullscreen), there might be some interactions
with the video driver, but I'm no X guy at all.

Anyway, looks like that's not a bug in Blender after all. ;-)

Subject: blender: borders do work in wmii

Package: blender
Version: 2.45-5
Followup-For: Bug #410895

Hi,

Sorry, I found, I can have borders in Blender. However it always starts
fullscreen in floating space and I have to change that manually.
Tiling space should be default for applications and floating space is
there for apps like Gimp for example.
Since Tvtime does the same and watching videos with Xfmedia is often
only possible in fullscreen I guess I should report a bug in Wmii?
Also Blender starts fine in Dwm window manager.

Regards,
Sladi

Hi,

since that's not a bug in blender, I'm tempted to actually close it. If
people are still experiencing problems with Compiz, they're welcome to
report them against the appropriate packages (that are now available in
Debian). Since some time passed since this bugreport got opened, I'm not
reassigning to any compiz package, since I'm not sure how to reproduce
it with appropriate hardware.
