Package: xscreensaver
Severity: wishlist
Hi,
Several users have requested support for xscreensaver hacks in
gnome-screensaver (see bug 344559 and merged reports).
For this to happen, it would be nice if xscreensaver could be split
into two packages, one providing the actual xscreensaver
infrastructure and one with the hacks (bug 344568).
The xscreensaver hacks also need to provide .desktop files
(translations from xscreensavers xml configuration) for
gnome-screensaver to pick up the screensavers. This work has already
been done by Ubuntu, it would be great if the same could be done in
Debian.

The space savings is not worth the effort, or the cost of making the
packaging setup even more complicated than it already is.
Current sizes of the xscreensaver 5.01 packages (on Red Hat 9, sorry,
it's what I have easy access to right now):
747 KB xscreensaver-base-5.01-1.i386.rpm
3208 KB xscreensaver-extras-5.01-1.i386.rpm
3518 KB xscreensaver-gl-extras-5.01-1.i386.rpm
The "xscreensaver-base" package contains not only xscreensaver, but a
bunch of common infrastructure required for the hacks themselves to
function (xscreensaver-text, xscreensaver-getimage, app-defaults, etc.)
Splitting the xscreensaver-base package into two packages so that you
could leave out the saver itself would save around 400 KB.
That's less than 5% of the size of the total package. It's hardly
worth the effort!
If you're really concerned about tiny size savings like that, there
are more effective approaches: for example, making it possible for
all those xml files to be gzipped. Or making sure that unused
localizations don't get installed.

Hi,
even if you don't want to split the base package, the .desktop files are
still needed to make the hacks work in gnome-screensaver.
Do you have any hint about when you intend to add them ?
Thanks,
Xav
