Subject: libnet-google-perl: Remote SOAP dependency not fulfilled
Date: Wed, 31 Jan 2007 11:30:40 +0100
Package: libnet-google-perl
Version: 0.62-2
Severity: important

This package depends on a SOAP service once offered by Google, which is
not offered anymore. As such, the package is useless at least with
Google's implementation of the service. (There might be alternatives,
but I'm not aware of *public* services using the same API).

I believe the problem of remote dependencies does not just apply to this
package but to a few others as well. I've contacted the pkg-games-devel
team to think about it a bit, since game servers will suffer from the
same issue. There might be more such on-the-wire dependencies.

<http://googlecode.blogspot.com/2009/08/well-earned-retirement-for-soap-search.html>
describes that the SOAP search API has just been retired - but this bug has been
reported in 2007.

I suggest we remove this from the archive, because it has become useless. We
should also file a bug upstream about this, but with the last upload to CPAN
having been in 2005, I don't put much into that.

Ack, if the SOAP interface doesn't exist anymore, this package is
useless.

Cheers,

Ok, I thinks we should fill now a Removal Request then. I'm filling it now.

You filled the bug http://bugs.debian.org/409163 in Debian BTS
against the package libnet-google-perl. I'm closing it at *unstable*, but it will
remain open for older distributions.

For more information about this package's removal, read
http://bugs.debian.org/557201. That bug might give the reasons why
this package was removed and suggestions of possible replacements.

Don't hesitate to reply to this mail if you have any question.

Thank you for your contribution to Debian.
