Message #5 received at submit@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
Package: amule
Version: 2.1.3-1
Severity: wishlist
Please could you make ~/Desktop/ the default incoming directory ? Having it
in a dotdir confuses unexperienced users (since they have to figure out how
to access hidden dirs in their file browser).
Alternatively, you could make a symlink from ~/Desktop/something to
~/.aMule/incoming in the first run of the program.

Message #10 received at 409068@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
While I do not agree with Desktop being a good location for Incoming files (everything that you put there will automatically be shared, for example), I think it is an excellent idea to use a regular (non-hidden) directory for downloaded files. aMSN, for example, uses ~/amsn_received for that.
I've filed a bug upstream as well: http://www.amule.org/abugs/view.php?id=1407 (requires account)

It should use XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR instead. See
https://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/xdg-user-dirs/
