Hi,
we would like to provide the Debian package for the OSE version ourself. Any
help is appreciated. I will start providing the current build scripts for
the package we used for the existing packages (will take a day or so).
We also would like to get the non-OSE version included into non-free with
a hint that this version has some more features than the OSE version.
Kind regards,
Frank

Hi,
my package is nearly done, only the module source package is to not yet
finished. However, you're of course welcome to co-maintain it with me
and Patrick.

good. Please tell me where I can grap the diff.gz as soon as you've
uploaded it somewhere.
> We also would like to get the non-OSE version included into non-free with

Does the features of the proprietary version require a rebuild of the
underlying virtualbox, or, can they be independently packages as
add-ons? If not, this means that there would be two complete virtualbox
packages in Debian, I'm not so sure if we really want that.
Unrelated to that, there are some issues with the build, such as
requiring linux-headers as build-dependency of virtualbox frontend, not
the module-source. Where is the proper list to discuss this?
Regards,
Daniel

The proprietary features require a rebuild of the whole virtualbox
directory, so yes, probably two independent packages would be required.

Hi Daniel,
here is a snapshot of the debian/ directory. There is still much work todo.
Not all dependencies are added to debian/control (especially for building
the vboxdrv kernel module). The changelog file is very hackish.
Note that currently no official .tar.gz archives of VBox OSE exist. We plan
to release them within the next days.
Kind regards,
Frank

It doesn't actually matter, but real release tarballs looks nicer than
snapshots though :)

Both were created today and you I added you both to the project. I'll
commit a first version to the svn tomorrow as a basis of discussion.

What is the status of this? I have seen in the SVN a first commit from 21th
february and not further activity.
I would love to see virtualbox in Debian, please continue with the packaging

I'll add my local changes as a diff file but since I did not get write
access to the svn from Daniel I have stopped working on vbox.

Hi,
since virtualbox is still stuck in the NEW queue, I tried to build it
myself for i386 from the pkg-virtualbox subversion repository with a
tarball repackaged according to the instructions in
debian/README.rebuild and found the following problems (using a sid
pbuilder environment):
* it lacks a Build-Depends: libhal-dev
* somewhere a hard coded yasm path pointing to tools/linux.x86/bin/yasm
is used, i fixed this by creating this directory and a symlink there
to /usr/bin/yasm in debian/rules
* it seems to look for kernel headers in /usr/src/linux
after several tries to use the ones in /usr/include I still got
missing headers and finally gave up.
The configure option --with-linux=... seemed not to work.
The following patch helped a bit: in Config.kmk set
export VBOX_LINUX_SRC := /usr
The buildds probably will fail with the same errors.
Is there a pkg-virtualbox developer mailinglist? Since I couldn't find
one I attach this information to the ITP.

Message #113 received at 406992@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
Hi all,
after several more tries, I finally could compile virtualbox (in a
pbuilder sid i386 environment).
The following changes were neccessary
* drop Build-Depends: gcc-3.4, g++-3.4
* drop 01-compiler.dpatch, 02-kernel.dpatch
* add a Depends: kbuild to virtualbox-source
Concerning the kernel headers: It looks like the kernel headers of the
currently running kernel is needed. Using a different set, e.g.
2.6.18-4-686 or 2.6.21-2-k7 instead of the running 2.6.21-2-k7-686
results in some undefined symbols (sorry, can't tell which, didn't save
a log).
So I did the following:
* add Build-Depends: linux-header-2.6-all
and in debian/rules I set
* ./configure --with-linux=/usr/src/linux-headers-`uname -r`
Unfortunetly, the requires the buildds to run the latest sid kernel in
order to be able to compile virtualbox.
I also tried to compile virtualbox from the svn trunk:
03-configure.dpatch needed to be rediffed, but afterwards everything
went without problems.
And now: I'm gonna try it :-)

Hi,
I just solved the most disgusting lintian warnings/errors be moving all files
out of /opt/VirtualBox-xzy to their (hopefully) proper place. I exported our
debian scripts to our external repository.
I would be appreciated if we could solve the remaining problems together. So
far I see the following problems:
- still no copyright file, we will provide one
- no manpages
- unstrippped binary objects: We cannot change this because we need to load
these modules at runtime (similar as XFree86 did before they switched
to .so modules)
- our .so libs have no major/minor. Not sure if we should really provide one
but this induces some lintian warnings
- How to generate the SVN as part of the version? I would like to do it like
Torsten did it with his kBuild package
- In case you are asking: the lintian overrides for PIC code in our shared
libs are necessary, currently no way to build them as PIC.
- the package still compiles the kernel module during install, I assume this
should be removed (and the module stuff in preinst/postinst as well)
Maybe others.
I would like to hear your opinion.
Frank

not so much of a problem for a first upload, can be fixed later.

nope; for release software, the proper version scheme is e.g. 1.4.0-1,
1.4.0-2 etc.; and for svn snapshots it would be
1.4.0+${date}.${svn_revision}-1 (or 1.4.0+${date}-1 for short).

don't worry about the kernel module, i'll take care about that.
i'm in holidays until friday evening. if you fix the copyright and
license stuff until then, i can prepare an upload to unstable at
saturday morning.

Hello,
I've a new module build system which should fix those module issues:
* Build depens on linux-headers-2.6, which should install the latest
kernel headers.
* get the kernel version we are going to build for then, having a look
to /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6*
* create a debian/dirs from it
* configure --with-linux=$version, still the version we got in
/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6*
* add a deps on linux-image-$version
The downside is that it will work *only* if you re-upload a new
revision for each new kernel package.
I have to clean up a bit my debian/rules and I'll send it to you if
you are interested.
Thanks for your time, have a nice day.
Arthur.
PS: I think the binary package should be named virtualbox-ose and not
virtualbox, as upstream already provides debian package and as the
versions (ose and non-ose) packaged are not the same.

Description:
virtualbox - PC virtualization solution
virtualbox-source - Source for the VirtualBox module
Closes: 406992 407001 409711
Changes:
virtualbox (1.4.0svn4130-dfsg-1) unstable; urgency=low
.
[ Philipp Hug ]
* Stripped kbuild and yasm from source tarball
* Use Debian's kbuild and yasm instead
* Added myself as uploader
* Build target for module is now all instead of module
* Build against correct kernel source
* Integrated changes by Patrick Winnertz
* clean: rm env.sh AutoConfig.kmk configure.log
* Install udev rules to automatically create device
* Automatically create vboxusers group
* Binary names are now lowercase
* Disabled stripping for VMM because it breaks VirtualBox
* Don't require kernel module, recommend it instead
.
[ Patrick Winnertz ]
* Initial release (Closes: #406992, #407001, #409711).
* Remove Microsoft license stuff from orig.tar.gz (repackaged it )
See dfsg-free section in debian/rules for details.
* Added patch to use own yasm
* Added patch to remove Additions from the Makefile.kmk
* Remove ./src/libs/xpcom18a4/nsprpub/build/autoconf from source tarball.
* Doesn't depend on gcc-3.4 and g++-3.4 since they are going to be removed from
debian. Use default instead.
Therefore I removed the patch, too.
* Don't call dh_installdeb twice. (build-dep & build-indep)
* Added section to create dfsg tarball automatically to debian/rules (experimental!!)
* Added lintian.overrides for -fPIC since somehow virtualbox doesn't work with
* Added patch to prevent building modules and kernel code when building the
gui.
* Install udev rule with virtualbox and not with the module, since several
modules for several kernels could be there.
* Improved copyright statements in copyright file.
* Corrected .desktop file
