Package: linux-image-2.6.18-3-686
Version: 2.6.18-7
Severity: important

I try to load the i915 module, and it aborts with the following error
after loading the agpgart and drm modules:

[drm:drm_fill_in_dev] *ERROR* Cannot initialize the agpgart module.

I have a motherboard with a 965G chipset, and this module works in
Kubuntu breezy (based on a 2.6.17 kernel) without a problem, as far as I
can see.

I have attached two files, one with a lspci output, another with the
lsmod output of my system.

A few other remarks:

The installation was done with the Etch netinst daily build, downloaded
at 20061229. It is a new installation.

The reason I wanted to install this module (apart from the fact that
it worked on kubuntu, the other distribution I installed on this machine) was that
I needed agp support for the i810 X driver.

The exact output I got when modprobing for this module was:

Jan 8 20:48:00 testserver kernel: Linux agpgart interface v0.101 (c) Dave Jones
Jan 8 20:48:00 testserver kernel: [drm] Initialized drm 1.0.1 20051102
Jan 8 20:48:00 testserver kernel: [drm:drm_fill_in_dev] *ERROR* Cannot initialize the agpgart module.

No /dev/agpgart device was present after the install, and creating it (with
'mknod -m 666 /dev/agpgart c 10 175') also didn't work.

Geert-Jan.

Hi!

I also have a motherboard with Intel 965G integrated graphics (it's an
Asus P5B-VM, for the record) and I think that getting this chipset work
out of the box with Debian etch would be *very* important.

I read that some people (among which Joerg Becker[1]) have successfully
backported the intel-agp module from more recent Linux kernel versions.

[1] http://lists.debian.org/debian-kernel/2007/01/msg00798.html

Could this approach be adopted for the official etch 2.6.18 Linux
kernel?
Pretty please?!?

the etch kernel is frozen.
nevertheless cherrypicking the important patch may qualify for
a stable release update.

Yeah, I know, but, IIUC, at least one update[1] is due to fix some RC
bugs (and this is one of the main blockers for the release of etch
Debian-Installer RC2).
Hence, I thought that maybe this little patch could be applied to the
new Linux kernel revision that must sooner or later migrate from
unstable to testing... ;-)

[1] from 2.6.18-7 to 2.6.18.dfsg.1-10, according to
http://bjorn.haxx.se/debian/testing.pl?package=linux-2.6

This would be suboptimal, since the Intel 965G graphics chipset would
begin working out of the box (in etch) only once 4.0r1 is out.
It's already hard to predict the etch release date, I really cannot
imagine when the first etch release update will possibly be out!

21:51 <jcristau> does anyone know why support for the i965 was backported to
                 2.6.18 in drivers/char/drm, but not in drivers/char/agp?
21:51 <waldi> hmm
21:51 <kyle> jcristau, "oops"
21:51 <kyle> i imagine.
21:52 <jcristau> would it be possible to get that in r1? I imagine many
installs will need that during the etch timeframe
21:56 <maks> jcristau that was the fedora patch, yeah seems wrong
21:56 <jcristau> the commit in agp is 65c25aadfa4e917060e99fe459f33a6a07db53cc,

I need linux-image-2.6.18-5-amd64_*_amd64.deb, but it seems that
http://kernel-archive.buildserver.net/debian-kernel
does not have such a build.
I don't have the time to build it myself, now.
Will the amd64 build be available on kernel-archive.buildserver.net in
the near future?

Moreover, I'm currently running Debian testing (lenny) and I'm waiting
for linux-image-2.6.20-1-amd64_*_amd64.deb to migrate from unstable to
testing.
According to
http://bjorn.haxx.se/debian/testing.pl?package=linux-2.6
this migration is currently blocked by the usual 10-day quarantine, by
RC bugs, and by the migration of glibc (which, in its turn, is too
young, has RC bugs, and is in freeze...).

I wonder if I could just install linux-image-2.6.20-1-amd64_*_amd64.deb
from sid:

  $ wget http://ftp.it.debian.org/debian/pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-image-2.6.20-1-amd64_2.6.20-3_amd64.deb
  # dpkg -i linux-image-2.6.20-1-amd64_2.6.20-3_amd64.deb

Does a lenny box need glibc 2.5 to work properly with that kernel from
sid? By comparing dependencies, it seems that the kernel is installable
on a lenny box:
http://packages.debian.org/testing/admin/linux-image-2.6.18-4-amd64
http://packages.debian.org/unstable/admin/linux-image-2.6.20-1-amd64

What do you suggest?

Hi,

i built the amd64 kernel myself. Everything works fine with the 2.6.18-5
image now, great work!

I hope this can be included in an updated version of debian etch?

greetings,
Eike Dehling

I installed 2.6.20-1 from sid onto my lenny box: it installs cleanly and
works fine. /dev/agpgart is correctly created and 965G graphics chip
works, with DRI 3D accelaration.
