Package: xserver-xorg-video-ati
Version: 1:6.6.3-2
Severity: important
When rotating the 3D viewport with the middle mouse button in Blender
2.42a-5, X seems to freeze. The screen doesn't update and X does not
respond to keyboard or mouse input. The system itself does not seem to
crash as my music is still playing in the background, still I'm forced
to reboot.

Please provide the full xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log (from after this
happens) files as well as the output of
LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose blender 2>&1 >/dev/null

Hi,
Here's the output after running blender:
libGL: XF86DRIGetClientDriverName: 5.2.0 r200 (screen 0)
libGL: OpenDriver: trying /usr/lib/dri/r200_dri.so
drmOpenByBusid: Searching for BusID pci:0000:01:00.0
drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is 4, (OK)
drmOpenByBusid: drmOpenMinor returns 4
drmOpenByBusid: drmGetBusid reports pci:0000:01:00.0
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x4b
libGL error:
Can't open configuration file /etc/drirc: No such file or directory.
xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log are attached.

Thanks, looks like it's using direct rendering. Does the freeze also
happen without Option "AGPMode"? Generally speaking, make sure the same
AGP transfer mode is configured in xorg.conf as in the BIOS setup.

Is the log file from a frozen X server?

I tried it with AGPMode commented out, and the freeze still happens.
So far Blender is the only application I have this problem with, but I'm
not really a heavy 3D user.

It should be, I believe GDM renames the log file to .old when I start up
the next time.
I also tried tailing the log file over ssh when the freeze occurs, but I
couldn't see any additional output.

Thanks for trying this. The evidence so far points towards r200_dri.so
from libgl1-mesa-dri or possibly the radeon DRM from the kernel.
When you log in via ssh after the freeze, is the X server still running?
Is it (or another process) hogging the CPU?

Yes, Xorg is still running and hogging the CPU.
As for the kernel, I'm running version 2.6.18-8 of
linux-image-2.6.18-3-686.
These two lines from the log file seems new, but I have no idea if they
are related to the freeze or not.

If this still happens with current drm and mesa git, you should probably
report it upstream at http://bugs.freedesktop.org . Meanwhile, I'm
reassigning to libgl1-mesa-dri.

It's unlikely that they are.

I just found out in the upstream bug report that you don't own this
hardware anymore and that it's probably a good idea to close this report.
So let's close it.
If anybody ever reproduces, feel free to reopen.
