Subject: libgif4: Should this package provide libungif4g?
Date: Sat, 02 Dec 2006 12:37:53 +0100
Package: libgif4
Version: 4.1.4-1
Severity: important

Hi!

I recently discovered that on my testing/unstable system, giflib3g and
giflib3g-dev are no longer available from the repository. I tried to
upgrade these to libgif4 and libgif-dev, but that broke a lot of
dependencies because libgif4 Conflicts: with libungif4g and Replaces: it.

However, the package does not have a Provides: attribute for libungif4g,
so all packages depending on that will be broken by installing libgif4.

I see two solutions to this:
 - State in the libgif4 package that it Provides: libungif4g
 - Convince all the other packages' maintainers to depend on libungif4g |
libgif4. That would be an awful lot of packages.

These packages currently depend on libungif4g: (as reported by aptitude)

Ok, but why are we shipping giflib-tools in etch at all?

Please take a look at this:

# apt-get install giflib-tools
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
The following extra packages will be installed:
  libgif4
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  emacs21 gdk-imlib11 gettext-el libungif4g libwraster3 mplayer
  mplayer-skin-blue python-mode wmaker xzgv
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  giflib-tools libgif4
0 upgraded, 2 newly installed, 10 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 204kB of archives.
After unpacking 23.9MB disk space will be freed.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]? n
Abort.

IMHO, this is the kind of things we should try to avoid in a stable release,
as they create a lot of confusion for our ousers.

i don't know, i don't even know why it even updated in testing on
february 2007.

release team, please just remove giflib from testing, no package does
depend on it (yet).

Evidently because the package was reported to close bug #395382.

Removed, though I thought the reason it wasn't removed before was because
there was a package that had depended on it.

It looks like the easy way to fix this would be to modify the libungif4g
package to not contain libgif but unstead depend on the libgif4 package
for it and version the conflict in the libgif package to reflect that
change.

Then once that change has reached testing the build-deps of packages
that use libungif can be changed to use libgif gradually without causing
disruption.

It should be noted:

http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=753553

"Work on libungif has been halted due to the expiration of the patent on LZW.
giflib continues to have bugfixes and patches merged. As part of this work,
the sourceforge project has been renamed from libungif to giflib."

Amd64 Unstable libgif4:

Conflicts: libungif4g
Replaces: libungif4g
Provides: libungif4g

But no virtual package "libungif4g" created and much of apps
(*term, mplayer and so on) won't install.

Probably exacly like last time there's just no link... Please correct
in less time than last time;)
