Here is some brief documentation on how to make mounting
harddrive partitions from a removable boot device a little slicker.
Maybe could be included in the user's FAQ on the debian-live wiki?

HOWTO make hard disk partitions auto-mountable

The following instructions have been tested in KDE. They
should also work for Gnome as well, to the extent that it uses
HAL in the same way as KDE!
To allow harddrive partitions to appear in the KDE media:/ ioslave,
one simply needs to remove a file installed by the hal package:

#rm ${CHROOT}/usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/debian-storage-policy-fixed-drives.fdi

(then recreate and boot ISO)

Ext2, Ext3, and vfat partitions are mounted read-write. NTFS
partitions are mounted read-only....
The ability to mount NTFS read-write using media:/ _almost_ works.
Install the ntfs-3g package and link /usr/bin/ntfs-3g -> /sbin/mount.ntfs
(then recreate and boot ISO.)
Clicking on the NTFS partition will mount it read-write, but KDE isn't
informed of this by HAL. The partition will be mounted under /media/ and
can be accessed from there. The media:/ slave continues to show the partition
as unmounted.
(A future version of HAL may fix this problem. See this HAL commit
http://gitweb.freedesktop.org/?p=hal.git;a=commit;h=2ea340399bf8cf3d2bb6bd1b5c4ecbc2042e93d4 )
