Package: ext2resize
Version: 1.1.19-3
Severity: important

ext2resize is not working with recent versions of ext2/ext3.

resize2fs is doing the same job and is included in e2fsprogs with other
ext2/ext3 utilities.

no need for another outdated package for ext2 resizing.

When did it stop working? I believed it still worked.

I agree that resize2fs is doing a better job for resizing, but as far
as I know the ext2prepare tool in the ext2resize package is still
useful and lack a replacement in e2fsprogs. The ext2prepare tool is
the only reason why I keep maintaining ext2resize in Debian.

resize2fs is the way to go for resizing ext partitions. If I create a
package that just contains ext2prepare would you be willing to remove
this package? Having an unmaintained ext2resize around may potentially
be dangerous as ext2/3/4 move forward.

Hi.

Stupid question, but is ext2prepare still needed these days? I guess it
is needed on filesystems created years ago, but I was able to resize
recently created filesystems without much trouble.

Anyway, if ext2prepare is still needed, my choice for the future of the
ext2resize package was to Depend on the package e2fsprogs and to provide
a stub that either converts ext2resize parameters into resize2fs
parameters and calls that or that simply aborts and advises the user to
utilize resize2fs instead of ext2resize.

Later, say in Debian/Lenny, ext2resize could be removed completely if
ext2prepare isn't needed any longer, or replaced by an ext2prepare
package if that is still needed.

regards,
Sven

Hi,

any news regarding this bug? IMO we should clarify the ext2resize
vs. resize2fs situation.

thanks

I'm the maintainer of this package, and I have doubt about ext2resize
being included in Lenny. I have not found time to investigate
properly, but if I understand correctly, the ext2prepare program do
not work with the recent kernels, and thus the only useful program in
the package is broken. I agree that some transition path should be
prepared, but do not believe I will have time to work on it in time.
The workaround is to create a new file system with the resize_inode
and copy data, so it is possible to handle if one got enough disk
space.

Because of this, I flag this bug as release critical, and urge someone
else to take over.

Upstream development for this package is as far as I can tell dead.
There are some fixes commited to upstream SCM by me and a few others.
I became part of the upstream development group, but lacked the
privileges to make a new release, and thus was unable to get fixed
versions out that way. Did not find time to try to do anything about
it.

Happy hacking,

You filled the bug http://bugs.debian.org/400797 in Debian BTS
against the package ext2resize. I'm closing it at *unstable*, but it will
remain open for older distributions.

For more information about this package's removal, read
http://bugs.debian.org/553894. That bug might give the reasons why
this package was removed and suggestions of possible replacements.

Don't hesitate to reply to this mail if you have any question.

Thank you for your contribution to Debian.
