Subject: ITP: openjdk-compiler -- sun java compiler, javac
Date: Mon, 13 Nov 2006 21:17:44 +0100
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

Hi

I intend to package openjdk-compiler (normally called javac) that
was released today by Sun as GPL software.

Name: openjdk-compiler
URL: https://openjdk.dev.java.net/compiler/
License: GPL with CLASSPATH exception, see text below
Description: Sun Java compiler

I have not yet determined what software that is needed in order
to compile this package. It may need a java virtual machine
or java classes. The java virtual machine is released under GPL
but the classes has not been released yet.

Help, name suggestions etc is appriciated. If this seems to be a
too big job, then I'll consider someone else to co-maintain, maintain
or group maintain by the java team.

"CLASSPATH" EXCEPTION TO THE GPL

Certain source files distributed by Sun Microsystems, Inc. are subject to
the following clarification and special exception to the GPL, but only where
Sun has expressly included in the particular source file's header the words
"Sun designates this particular file as subject to the "Classpath" exception
as provided by Sun in the LICENSE file that accompanied this code."

Linking this library statically or dynamically with other modules is making
a combined work based on this library. Thus, the terms and conditions of
the GNU General Public License cover the whole combination.

As a special exception, the copyright holders of this library give you
permission to link this library with independent modules to produce an
executable, regardless of the license terms of these independent modules,
and to copy and distribute the resulting executable under terms of your
choice, provided that you also meet, for each linked independent module,
the terms and conditions of the license of that module. An independent
module is a module which is not derived from or based on this library. If
you modify this library, you may extend this exception to your version of
the library, but you are not obligated to do so. If you do not wish to do
so, delete this exception statement from your version.

I just wanted to inform you on the debian-java list that I have
filed an ITP on openjdk-compiler that was released today. I hope
that I can compile it using only free software, so that it can
go to main.

However if it really requires the class libraries from sun then
we have to wait some more for them to release that as GPL software
as well.

Hi

I have now determined that it can build using itself as compiler
(If I make a preliminary version bootstrapped with binary sun javac).
However it seems to require the jvm from sun to compile though...

You need a jdk to bootstrap the compiler:
https://openjdk.dev.java.net/compiler/README.html#build

Maybe packaging such a piece of software need some discussions. Tom
Marble already worked a lot on the Sun' jdk package in non-free. Also,
I think there is an Alioth's project (if not, it should be) to package
the compiler and the hotspot.

Please, go co-maintaining with people who already worked on the jdk package.

Many thanks for your enthousiasme and for your so fast work ;-)

Hi

Some people may remember that I was working for a couple of years
on the java-policy, but stopped that after a while because it was so
hard to get things working as Sun java was the "standard" and it could
not go to main, or even non-free at that time. Now when Sun has changed
their mind on this, then I get my enthuiasm back. :)

Seems so. I hoped that I could use jvm from gcj or kaffe to build it. I have
tried gij and gcj. Next try will be kaffe as I want to be able to build
it with things from main only, so it can go to main. I'll make a few tries
now.

Good to know.

I'll do that, especially for the jdk as that seems more complicated than
the compiler. I have filed an ITP for that as well. :)

I know your work and I thank you for that. It's good to see you back.

I'd like to invite you to join the Alioth's pkg-java project, are you
ok with that?

There are some discussions at classpath@gnu.org to try to build javac
and hotspot with classpath library. This could also be an option.

People with interest about Sun's jdk in main, raise your keyboard in
the air, like you just care :-D (avdyk: hip hop fan).

It doesnt make sense to put this stuff into two different source
packages either. One source package is enough. We need to finish the
icedtea package. Then we will have all we need in Debian.

Cheers,
Michael

Things seems to have changed since I started packaging. Back then
it was clearly two diffent sources.

From what I have read about icedtea it is just a build framework
for openjdk. Or is it already included?

In any case it would be most welcome with a free jvm with classes
inside Debian. :)

This means that I'll merge these two bugs into one. :)

More or less, yes. In Debian the built binaries will provide a JDK
replacement.
