Comments/Problems:

When I tried with keyboard attached and used framebuffer interface, I
got different ESP SCSI errors both times - dmesg below (yay for
netcat!). I also tried one time with serial console and SCSI worked fine
but I got CD mount errors.

First time with FB, SCSI errored out and no SCSI device was accessible.
This try was not captured since I was not prepared.

The try with serial console did detect both SCSI devices fine but failed
to mount CD. Digging around showed that iso 9660 filesystem was not
available in /proc/filesystems and could not be modprobed either

The second try with framebuffer gave the SCSI error again and this time
I managed to copy dmesg using netcat. This time SCSI HDD errored out but
CD was detected and could not be mounted like before. dmesg of this try:

Thank you for your installation reports.

Jurij Smakov tells me that the problems with the esp driver for CD-ROM
access is a known issue in current kernels and AIUI not resolved for
2.6.18 either. Jurij said he'll try to work on it, but also that you've
been known to hack on such issues yourself :-)

The isofs module should be available in the initrd. Is it not?

Could you perhaps try a netboot install for this box? Please follow up to
this report.

Cheers,
FJP

No. It is only present for sparc64 but missing for sparc32 (again with
17. Oct netinst image, todays not tried).

Hmm. I doubt that. If I check the contents of an initrd for the same CD
image you used (sparc netinst from 17-10) I see:
/lib/modules/2.6.17-2-sparc32/kernel/fs/isofs/isofs.ko

So AFAICT it is available.

I retried it. When CD mounting failed, I switched to Alt-F2 and did
find /lib/modules -name '*iso*'
This yielded
/lib/modules/2.6.16-2-sparc64/kernel/fs/isofs
/lib/modules/2.6.16-2-sparc64/kernel/fs/isofs/isofs.ko

and nothing more.
/lib/modules/2.6.16-2-sparc32/kernel does not contain the fs subdir,
only drivers.

The fact that you have 2.6.16 means that you are using a Beta3 image and
not a daily image...
Please try a daily image instead (which uses 2.6.17).

Does this error still occur with more recent kernel versions?

Cheers,

Subject: Closing old installation report #393786
Date: Wed, 08 Sep 2010 03:58:19 +0000
We are closing this installation report for one of the following
reasons:
- it was reported with a pre-lenny version of Debian
  Installer.
- indications in the installation report give the feeling that
the reported problem waslying in another software, unrelated to
D-I, which we can't easily identify.
- indications in the installation report suggest that it may have been
fixed in a more recent version of a D-I component
- it was successful and we forgot closing it..:-)
- it has no information we consider useful

The D-I team is currently in the process of cleaning out the old spool
of installation reports that haven't bene processed yet.

In case you think that the problem you reported has chances to be
still present, please reiterate your installation test with
a more recent image of D-I, if you're in position of doing this.

You'll find daily builds at
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer. We recommend you choose
the netboot image, in the "daily builds section", then choose to
install "squeeze" when prompted.

If some problems are found, please report them with a new bug sent
against installation-reports.

Many thanks for your understanding and your help improving Debian,
past and present.
