Package: libapache2-mod-php4
Version: 4:4.4.4-3
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable
After the latest upgrade, PHP sites do not load. A directory listing of
the web root is dispayed. Clicking on the index.php file initially
loaded the site up correctly (a Joomla site). After reinstalling
libapache2-mod-php4 however, this is broken too - Joomla displays an
offline message. While that isn't a problem of this package, I mention
it because nothing on the site was altered.

- from what version did you upgrade?

- how can i reproduce this?
thanks,
sean

Message #19 received at 392839@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
The upgrade was from the unstable version of a few months ago, sorry,
I don't know how to obtain that informaiton once the upgrade is done.
I think it was a 4.3.x.
apache2-common was replaced by apache2.2-common during the upgrade.
After downgrading apache2, libapache2-mod-php4, and associated
packages to stable, I think the problem could've been changes in
/etc/apache2/sites-available/default, since I had to edit it to get
stable to show the PHP site, instead of going to
/var/www/apache2-default. However as I described in the OP, I was
getting a directory listing instead of an HTML page or a PHP page, so
this isn't the exact problem. But it is likely other configuration
files were replaced causing the problem.

Message #24 received at 392839@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
I encountered the same symptons with PHP scripts today. I haven't used
any local PHP script for a while so I cannot state when PHP had
stopped working.
However, by chance I noticed that Apache's "dir" module has not been
configured properly: In /etc/apache2/mods-enabled I had only a symlink
to dir.load, but the symlink to dir.conf was missing. Adding the
symlink and reloading the web server reenabled PHP.

The libapache2-mod-php4 package has been removed from Debian testing, unstable and
experimental. I am reassigning its bugs to the libapache2-mod-php5 package. Please
have a look at them, and close them if they don't apply to
libapache2-mod-php5 anymore.
Don't hesitate to reply to this mail if you have any question.

this is not the first time someone has done a mass-reassignment on old php4
bugs. blindly reassigning bugs from php4->php5 is not the proper protocol
here. just because php4 will not be in lenny does not mean that it is not
still in debian. furthermore, if the bug affected php5 it should have
already been cloned to php5.
thanks,
sean

You filed the bug http://bugs.debian.org/392839 in Debian BTS
against the package libapache2-mod-php4. I'm closing it at *unstable*, but it will
remain open for older distributions.
For more information about this package's removal, read
http://bugs.debian.org/428266. That bug might give the reasons why
this package was removed and suggestions of possible replacements.
Don't hesitate to reply to this mail if you have any question.
Thank you for your contribution to Debian.
