Severity: normal

Hi, I've amarok installed on my system and some files which has russian
id3 tags in windows-1251 codepage inside and I run amarok in UTF8
environment. It uses libtag1c2a as a tool for reading id3 tags and tags
in cp1251 or other russian codepage are not displaying correctly.
There is a patch to taglib for correct detecting codepage of id3 tags available at
http://rusxmms.sourceforge.net/index.php?page=download.php
could you please apply it to taglib ?

Thanks in advance.

Timur.

Any news on fixing this bug? This is an issue really painful for many
russian users who have large MP3 collections with russian tags, so
having this library fixed would be really useful.

This patch is rather intrusive and furthermore would make taglib link to
a library that is not even in Debian, so I won't apply it.

I seem to recall that there was an option in amarok to set the charset
of ID3v1 tags, but I can't find it now. Maybe it's more useful that you
see why it was removed, or that you talk with the taglib author to
include your patch.

Followup the bug #384573, reattach your current attachment and try to negate
the arguments why this bug should be unmarked as wontfix. It also looks rather
intrusive to me and I'm afraid it could break other encodings.

However, what is the most important and a real showstopper, there is NO
librcc-dev in Debian.

When you get needed external libraries (librcc if I understand correctly) into
Debian, you can get back to me about this bug. Until then, nothing can be
done.

I see you worked hard to get this library into archive. However:

1) The package is currently not available on other arches but i386. Make sure
it builds on other arches first (I'm using amd64).

2) You bundle librcc together with gtk/ui frontend of some sort in the single
package. I surely don't want libtag to depend on gtk. Please split gtk stuff
off from librcc0, leave only librcc.so.0 in there (I know that this means NEW
again, but I'm sorry, GTK dependency is not acceptable for taglib).

> Patch is safe for other languages and by default work on russian, ukrainian

Which portion of the patch supports this claim? I don't see any locale check
in the patch.

Then get back to me.

Ah, and another much more important blocker: librcc is GPL, taglib is LGPL. So
according to [1], taglib license must be switched to GPL in order to allow
legal distribution. I am pretty sure that this is not going to happen, so you
better ask librcc author to relicense the library under LGPL v2 or later.
Otherwise taglib linked with librcc cannot be distributed legally.

ok. However, I think I'll still provide two versions of libtag1c2a which could
be used interchangeably: libtag1-vanilla (original) and libtag1-rusxmms (is
this correct name or is libtag1-rcc (I like the latter more) better?) with
libtag1-vanilla being default. I think it is a good compromise between
standard compliance and real world in Russia/Ukraine/Belarus to ask users
wanting librcc functionality to install libtag1-rcc manually. What is more, I
believe such broken tags should disappear soon as better player are written.
Btw, have you tried pushing this to taglib upstream?

So I have uploaded 1.5-5 with RusXMMS support to experimental today. However,
it obviously got stuck in NEW. I would be greatful if you subscribed to taglib
PTS and took care of any rusxmms bugs when/if they arise.

Closes: 384573
Changes:
 taglib (1.5-5) experimental; urgency=low
 .
   * Port buildsystem from cdbs to debhelper v7 (>= 7.0.50). cmake
     support implemented via dh_overrides.
   * Pass CMAKE_USE_RELATIVE_PATHS=ON to cmake. Hence build depend on
     cmake 2.6.2.
   * Strip debian/tmp from debian/*.install files. Not needed with dh v7.
   * Add RusXMMS support (Closes: #384573):
     - RusXMMS patch contributed by Ivan Borzenkov, thanks;
     - add two libtag1 flavours: vanilla (libtag1-vanilla) and rusxmms
       libtag1-rusxmms);
     - new libtag1-* flavours replaces old libtag1c2a;
     - libtag1c2a becomes a metapackage which depends on either of flavours
       via alternate depends. Both libtag1-vanilla and libtag1-rusxmms export
       themselves as libtag1c2a via shlibs/symbol files;
     - rework buildsystem and build both flavours in their own build directories
       (builddir-vanilla and builddir-rusxmms);
     - employ some quilt on-the-fly patching hacks to patch and unpatch source
       with rusxmms patch as needed;
     - build depend on librcc-dev. RusXMMS needs it;
     - add more lintian-overrides as the changes above triggered them.
   * Get rid of old conflicts/replaces of the libtag1c2a package.

taglib is in experimental. Please test and report problems if any. I want to
get this over with and upload that taglib to unstable as soon as possible.

Hello,
All work fine - i remove my old packed and update libtagc0 and libtag1c2a
libtag1-vanilla install on depend, then i run amarok and show boroken tags,
after that i install libtag1-rusxmms - all tags show normal.

Cool, all work :)
