Package: gs-esp
Version: 8.15.2.dfsg.1-1
Severity: important
I've observed it when I've tried to print document from OpenOffice Writer
with Arial font using CUPS Kyocera FS-1000 Foomatic/pxlmono backend.
Using 600 DPI quality, only two letters (small and big slashed L) has been
printed. Later I've tried to change backend to CUPS+Gutenprint also in
600 DPI and result was the same, but in 150 DPI accented small letter e was
printed additionally - letters 'a c s z' still didn't have their accents.
Next I've exported document to pdf and tried to print from kpdf - no luck
also - on screen everything looks ok, but on paper fails. So I've checked
what happens when importing pdf version to GIMP using 600 DPI and final
picture was without accents. Next I've checked other fonts in document
FreeSans and FreeSerif - didn't helped - same error. So finally I've
downgraded 8.15.1.dfsg.1-2 from 'testing' and with this version everything
works fine.

Hi,
this bug also appears with german umlauts. I attach a PDF, showing the
problem.
With 8.15.1.dfsg.1-2, the file is rendered correctly by
$ gv umlaute.pdf
With 8.15.2.dfsg.1-1, only two letters have their accent as they
should.
Using gs-gpl, this is not a problem.
Regards
Thomas

thanks
I'm bumping up the severity of this bug, preventing it from entering
testing. This bug breaks printing from everything using default gs for
at least two different languages. Additionally, the breakage isn't
obvious unless you check the printed output carefully.
Thanks
Thomas

Message #26 received at 381386@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
Hi,
just wanted to confirm the bug is still there. My symptoms are similar. I
can see all accented chars nicely in OOo 2.0.3 or when exported/printed
to PDF. However, as soon as I print into a PS (or to the printer) the
accents are lost (german Umlaut here).
The strange thing is that it is depending on the used fonts.
If I chose "Bitstream Vera Serif", the "u are there, but "a and "o are
just regular a and o. With "Gentium", I get the "o but no "a and "u.
Using Microsofts "Times New Roman" I get no "Umlaute" at all (of
course :) and using "Luxi Serif" gives me all the accents. Yay!
For now I am using that font for all important documents, but I hope the
bug will be rectified asap! It should get a "critical" rating, since
printing accented chars seems to be like playing the lottery!
Versions are: gs-esp 8.15.2.dfs, CUPS 1.2.2-1, OOo 2.0.3-5
Cheers
Jens

Hi,
I've just installed a cups server using gs-esp for printing and I also
encountered the same issue. Only some accents are printed only few
times, according to the font. I tested this using abiword, openoffice
and gedit.
Versions are:
gs-esp 8.15.2.dfsg.1-1
cupsys 1.2.2.1
Thanks
Guillaume
