Subject: xzgv: thumbnail loading broken
Date: Wed, 26 Jul 2006 07:30:05 +0800
Package: xzgv
Version: 0.8-5.1
Severity: normal

While #357562 appears to have been fixed quite some time ago, it seems
something else has caused thumbnail display to break.

Thumbnails now don't ever appear, independant of zoom and other settings.
Pressing 'u' to update only makes the on-screen thumbnails appear. This is
a change between 0.8-5 and 0.8-5.1.

Rebuilding main.c without -O2 fixes it (or at least works around it), if
that helps.

I see the same bug on my etch amd64 system.

Recompiling xzgv 0.8-5.1 from source without changes with gcc 4.1.1-15 still
gives the same bug.

Changing "-O2" to "-O" in debian/rules and recompiling fixes most (but not
all) problems. If you more than one screen of directories and enter one of
them, and then go back via "..", any directories not currently on screen
will have blank thumbnail instead of directory thumbnail.
if you go back via ".." to directory with pictures however, the problem does
not manifest itself and you can see all picture thumbnails normally.

Compiling without any "-O" options seems to completely fix the problem in
all the cases as far as I can see.

Package: xzgv
Version: 0.9+svn40-1
Followup-For: Bug #379869

As an alternative to rebuilding with -O, converting the program to use
g_idle_* instead of (deprecated?) gtk_idle_* seems to work. A crude and
possibly incomplete patch is attached. It may be useful as a starting point
for a real patch. :P

Hope This Helps!

I can confirm that the bug is *still* there on AMD64 Lenny
(in xzgv 0.9+svn40-1), as it was in AMD64 Etch (xzgv 0.8-5.1).

Also, I can confirm *either* of the following seems to completly cure
the bug, with no ill effects:

1) using Michael Deegans xzgv-use-g_idle.patch (attached earlier in the bug report)
2) rebuilding source using DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=noopt (which forces -O0 instead of -O2)

Is there a reason why the above patch couldn't be applied to the standard
debian package ? It fixes the important problem, and does not seem to break
anything at all. Is there anything more that could be done to help ?
