Message #5 received at submit@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
Package: libjpeg-progs
Version: 6b-13
Severity: normal
exifautotran doesn't rotate the thumbnail (although it doesn't claim
to). This means that intelligent programs that use the thumbnail will
show a picture inconsistent with the rotated main picture.
There's no need to fix this bug, as exiftran already performs the
correct transformation (using exiftran -ai); I suggest simply moving
exifautotran to /usr/share/doc/libjpeg-progs/. The only extra
dependency that exiftran has is on libexif12; expert users who can't
use it for some reason can always dig out exifautotran, or use the
underlying programs directly.
The reason I suggest removing exifautotran rather than just leaving it
is that it confused me because I used it thinking it worked fully and
correctly, and only later did I discover my error, having already used
it on a large number of pictures, whose thumbnails I then had to
correct using exiftran. (If it did work properly, then leaving it as
an alternative would be fine.)
