Subject: cupsys: 1.2.1-3 does not work: CUPS-Get-Classes client-error-not-found
Date: Thu, 22 Jun 2006 10:27:43 +0200
Package: cupsys
Version: 1.2.1-3
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

After upgrading to 1.2.1-3 my system wasn't able to print anymore. cups
starts correctly but fails to work. Neither kdeprint nor lpq were able
to connect. The access_log says: CUPS-Get-Classes client-error-not-found

Downgrading cupsys to 1.2.1-2 again makes everything work again immediately.

Not sure if this is of interest, but I have no local printer installeg
but only use remote printers.

Could you show us the result of "ls -la /etc/cups/"?
And you use a printer class, right?

Sorry, no idea what that means. I just installed cupsys because it
connects to the cups server in the network I'm in and gives me all
available printers. Since I'm changing networks quite frequently that's
nice to have.

OK... If you don't mind, could you send me tar+gz archive of
your /etc/cups and /var/log/cups/error_log? I'll try to reproduce.

Kenshi,

I want to confirm that the same problem happens to me, and that downgrading
cupsys package alone to the version 1.2.1-2 fixes the problem. Let me know if
you need me to send my config and log files as well, or if there is anything
else I could do to help nail this bug.

Below is what "ls -la /etc/cups/" gives me:

I'm sorry for delay, but I couldn't find a problem from your
configuration. I understood all of your printers were taken by using
network browsing.

- Could you try to update cups to 1.2.2-1?
- If you still have a problem, please set LogLevel debug in
cupsd.conf and restart. Is there any message in
  /var/log/cups/error_log?
- Please send me your /etc/cups/cupd.conf after the update.

The same problem still persists here after upgrading to 1.2.2-1; all my
network printers are out of business. Only versions 1.2.1-2 and earlier work,
so downgrading is at the moment the only workaround.

I'll try to do this by the end of the day, after the work. Best,

[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Kenshi,

It seems that this bug is caused by some default in the cupsd.conf file. I
didn't change the original conf file, and installation of newer cups would
overwrite the old cupsd.conf and install the new one at every upgrade.

This time I made sure the old conf file stays in place after the upgrade, and
now everything works fine after upgrade to cupsys 1.2.2-1. I attach my conf
file (the old one, which came with version 1.2.1-2, the one that works fine
for me) below in hope you can figure out what was going on. I'll play with
this a little bit more myself...

Cheers,
Slaven

Same here. Some more infos. The access_log is no longer just containing
error messages, but:

So this seems as if it works, but it doesn't. All I have is some
strange processes lying around:

The server doesn't notice anything according to the logs.

To make things even stranger, the very same setup on the very same
machine works nicely in my office environment with an older cups version
on the server but not on my home setup with 1.2.2 now.

On the server that has the printers attached or on your local machine? I
tried your conf to no avail on my laptop.

Sorry, I forgot to explain -- the cups server is running on my workstation, so
both cupsys and cupsys-client are executed at the same machine. The
configuration file belonged to the print server.

After a series of removal/reinstallation tests everything works well in
my network. To me it looks like a config problem that was solved by a
fresh reinstall. I'm downgrading this bug as it doesn't look release
critical to me. Keep in mind that most people either start with a fresh
install or upgrade from a way older version.

Feel free to close if you like.
