Package: gnome-utils
Version: 2.14.0-1
Severity: important
I have been using the gnome dict panel applet for a couple of years now.
It has gone through a number of changes, usually for the better, but the
current version has made it all but unusable for me. The biggest current
problem is that it insists on using dict.org, instead of localhost (like
it did before upgrading), and I can't find a place to configure that.
I have a dictd on localhost that is always available, and is very fast.
dict.org is not available when my laptop is offline, and even when it is
online, a lookup takes five to ten seconds.
Forcing people to use a remote server instead of a preferred local one
is quite a bad problem, which is why I think a severity of "important"
is justified.

Does "Edit -> Preferences -> Sources -> Add" not work?

The gnome-dictionary app - the applet's based on that - has one.

There is no Edit menu.

Excuse me, I am hasty. The editing of a server is hidden behind a popup
menu in the list (also, at least the Finnish translation claims to be a
list of dictionaries, not servers; one server can have any number of
dictionaries).
Using that might work, but I have lost the will to try, sorry (the
current version of the applet is unpleasant to use in so many ways that
telnetting to the dict port is faster, nicer, and easier to use;
upstream's bug tracker has reports of all or most of the problems
already, though, so I don't feel like reporting them against Debian,
too).
The real problem here then is why the previous, working setting to
localhost was forgotten upon upgrade.

I disagree: the bug is still there. The bug that makes the program
forget its settings over an upgrade. Please reopen and retitle.

gnome-dictionary has been rewritten, therefore the bug is due to
2.12->2.14 upgrade. If so, it's likely for this bug to be WONTFIX'ed
upstream. I'll talk to the maintainer later today.

Message #45 received at 374268@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
Hi,
I'm the gnome-dictionary author and gnome-utils co-maintainer. The
fastest way to add a dictionary source is using the Preferences dialog,
which is the same for both the dictionary application and applet (Edit
-> Preferences or right click on the applet, then Preferences). The
correct procedure is also explained in the dictionary's user manual.
The dictionary was completely re-written (it was way past any chance of
maintainability) during the 2.12 cycle. Unfortunately, I did not add a
way to port the old settings because if the format and storage of the
new dictionary is totally different from the previous (the change was
necessary in order to support multiple dictionary servers without having
to replace the current settings); I also could not add a dictionary
source for a local dictionary because I cannot assume in any way that
the user has installed a local dictionary server.
If you don't want to configure using the UI, dropping a file named
"local.desktop" with content:
[Dictionary Source]
Transport=dictd
Hostname=localhost
Port=2628
in the ${HOME}/.gnome2/gnome-dictionary directory will create a
dictionary source for the local dictionary server; this might also help
for multiple deployments or multi-user installations.
Ciao,
Emmanuele.
