Since ubuntu/dapper doesn't include a usable version of LIRC, I took lirc
from debian
testing. It appears that IR transmissions aren't functional in dapper. IR
reception (using mceusb & mceusb2 drivers) seems to work fine.
I have used transmitters that are proven to be working on WinLirc machines,
and a configuration
known to be working on a gentoo machine. I verified this on my personal
amd64 box, a mythtv x86 server,
and a mythtv x86 frontend. The IR diode will light up, but only for a short
period of time as compared to
a working IR transmission from gentoo.

The version in unstable is only 0.8.0-5. Can you try that one instead?
It is unlikely that it will make a difference, but at least we can make
sure.

Wow -debian devs are quite ungodly quick at replies :)
I just built 0.8.0-5 on this box (amd64) and reloaded the kernel modules and
run into the same problem.
A side note that I have realized, the transmission is a LOT shorter then
what I see when transmitting from a "working" gentoo installation on the
same box.
I made a short movie with my digital camera showing what the camera picks up
during 3 independent transmissions:
http://home.eng.iastate.edu/~superm1/lirc/irsend.mov
And like I indicated, the remote I use here in lircd.conf is the same used
on the working gentoo and winlirc box. Its the "Samsung" remote in the
lircd.conf I attached.

I just received fresh LTS disks of dapper today (I'd been working off my own
installs that were dist-upgraded). So just to verify that I wasn't entirely
crazy, I fired one up for a clean dapper environment without modifications
to work under and make sure that I didn't do any odd configurations.
This is the exact procedure I followed to verify that still my transmitters
don't work under dapper if anyone wants to repeat the procedures:
0) Boot up a Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Live disk
1) Download archives for lirc & svgalib from packages.debian.org
2) Enable universe/multiverse in synaptic
3) sudo apt-get install fakeroot dpkg-dev dialog module-assistant setserial
4) sudo apt-get build-dep lirc
5) dpkg-source -x svgalib_1.4.3-23.dsc
6) fakeroot dpkg-buildpackage
7) cd.. && sudo dpkg -i libsvga1*.deb
8) dpkg-source -x lirc_0.8.0-5.dsc
9) cd lirc-0.8.0
10) fakeroot dpkg-buildpackage
11) sudo dpkg -i liblirc*deb lirc*.deb
12) sudo m-a update,prepare
13) "configure" the files in /etc/lirc
sudo dpkg-reconfigure lirc-modules-source
Here are the results that I got:
A) /etc/lirc/lirc-modules-source.conf

I experimented with the Software Carrier option and without it in the clean

Hi there, Mario
I have been looking at the ubuntu patches, and it seems they are not
doing anything differently, except from not build-depending on
libsvga1-dev, and not suggesting lirc-svga, as you can see here:
http://patches.ubuntu.com/l/lirc/lirc_0.8.0-5ubuntu1.patch
Anyway, I fail to see how can this be related to the problem you are
experiencing. I would like you to confirm that this issues is still
there, if you can.
Thanks a lot!

Sorry, I read it all the wrong way, it is Gentoo that works and debian +
ubuntu that don't, which makes a lot more sense :)
Will look into it again.

Having that log might help me submit a more complete report for
upstream, do you still have it?

Amaya,
Still having the troubles - but I Have a minor update to complicate things.
I attempted this on a roomate's laptop that has a serial port. Installed
again from a fresh updated dapper. Grabbed the same lirc debs that I built
on my other x86 machine, threw them on there and grabbed the same conf
files. The thing works no hitch. I dont know what to make of this now
considering the fact. I recompiled lirc in debug mode and verified that the
same things are being sent out of each computer with a diff of the output
log. Its verbose the same (other then times being sent :))
I'm really thinking this must be related to some sort of timing issue,
perhaps this laptop of my roomate's doesn't support some kind of higher
speed clocking that my desktop and myth machine both do.

By no Hitch, I mean I didn't have to do anything special other then install
dapper, update to latest security updates, and install the lirc packages
that I built.
I am attaching a text file with several logs as well as indicating the
method that I used to enable debug mode (after the app was compiled for
debug)

One more update to add to this.
I installed a minimal x86 install of debian etch to a usb drive yesterday,
and installed the lirc packages directly from debian unstable repos. The
non functioning machines in dapper still won't go, and the one functioning
laptop from dapper that I have works with the etch install.
Also - *Erin Simonds <erin.simonds@gmail.com>* is running into the same
problem as well. We conversed over a few emails, and she is using Edgy Eft
(latest Ubuntu testing version). We went as far to try to contact some lirc
developers, but no one responded to our emails. I also sent something to
the lirc list a while back, but only received silence.

Still no progress on my end, but I have not experimented further since July
15th, 2006. I'm moving cross-country next month, so things are in disarray
for a while -- no time to tinker! Good luck on the bug hunt, I'd love to be
kept in the loop.

I have some further information to provide in this.
I just finished migrating another box from Gentoo to Ubuntu 6.10 and ran
into the exact same troubles as previously with other Ubuntu 6.06 boxes. I
didn't change any hardware configuration (or for that matter the location of
the transmitter itself on a receiver). The serial transmitter worked
perfectly in Gentoo, and stopped sending functional signals for Edgy. I
grabbed a newer snapshot that included support for MCEUSB2 transmitting and
tested with a MCEUSB2 transmitter. To my surprise, it worked out fine. It
appears to be problem that only plagues the serial transmitting module.

I would appreciate it if you could be more specific... We, as Debian
maintainers, have no idea what versions of lirc are shipped with Ubuntu
and with which versions of Ubuntu, and what kernels and what changes are
made to the kernels in Ubuntu. It just a different distro, it is very
hard for us to help you!
If you really want our help, please try installing Etch. Can I suggest
you try one of the latest version of our Installer?
The Net istall Cd (only 100MB) can be found at:
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest/i386/iso-cd/debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso
Maybe this version fixes your problem, and remember to press F3 as you
boot the CD and try out the new Grafical Installer :)
It rocks!

Amaya,
Ah sorry for the confusion. I have to netboot/nfs root this machine in
order to get it up and running (no hard drive in it), so getting an etch
install will just take a little time for me to get setup, but I would be
glad to.
For the ubuntu specific information, we are using your guys' 0.8.0-5 with a
minor patch related to dropping libsvga. We are on a 2.6.17 kernel.
I'll provide etch specific information soon.
Thanks!

Amaya,
I didn't install directly using your guys' ISO, but I debootstrap'ed off
your mirrors and installed linux-image-2.6.18-3-686 (version 2.6.18-7) for
my netboot. (Can I say painless installation even for NFS root :))
I installed lirc 0.8.0-9 and built both the mceusb2 and serial modules to
test with.
MCEUSB2 transmitting support isn't in your guys' build as its a CVS only
thing, so couldn't verify that. Serial support has the exact same problem.
I viewed using my digital camera to make sure it was really sending pulses,
and indeed it was - just not valid data. 0% success rate this time around
(earlier in the thread I had some limited success).
I'll keep this etch testing install around to help kill this bug :)

Does Gentoo patch their sources at all? If so, how can I take a look at
any Gentoo specific patch sets for lirc? I am beginning to suspect the
problem is in one of our patch sets, but I want to make sure.

The ebuilds can be viewed directly here:
http://gentoo-portage.com/app-misc/lirc
Obtaining the patches & ebuilds together can only really be easily done on a
gentoo system, so I tarred up the directory containing them all from another
gentoo box and attached them to this email. The version built was
lirc-0.8.0-r5. From glancing at the patches and ebuild, the only thing that
I see touching lirc-serial.c is a 2.6.19 kernel compatibility patch.

Upstream's 0.8.1pre4 includes changes in the mceusb2 module, I am trying
to package it right now to see if this fixes your issue.

Great, that's 50% of the problem only :)
I will retitle the bug when we manage to package 0.8.1, which is going
to take a bit, because we are playing a lot with repackaging.

Hi, I am one of the new maintainers of lirc in Debian. We have recently
packaged version 0.8.2, which is now in unstable and testing. There have
been a bunch of upstream changes which affect these modules, I believe
at least some of the problems have been fixed.
Do you still have time to check whether there are still any outstanding
issues, in which case I shall update the bug, or whether it all now
works and I can close the bug.
Thanks.

Hi Matthew,
Coming from the Ubuntu side now, the combination of the newer version as
well as well as building with the serial softcarrier I understand
works. I've been told by a variety of people. I'm going to try to dig
up an old serial blaster to try to see for sure for myself.
