Subject: jumpnbump-levels: rabbit disappears in upper left corner
Date: Tue, 06 Jun 2006 09:52:12 +0200
package: jumpnbump-levels
version: 0.0.20050626
severity: minor

Hi!

If I jump out of the screen in the upper left corner (at least in the
standard level and some others), my rabbit will disappear for many
seconds or maybe never fall back into the screen until I randomly press
the arrow keys.

To reproduce this behaviour run the standard level (jumpnbump.dat),
place your rabbit somewhere on the yellow-looking platform in the upper
left and press the jump-button.

Maybe this bug belongs to the 'jumpnbump' package, but I filed it
against the levels packaged as discussed before ;)

Nice greetings,
Fabian

Hi,

this bugs seems to be gone in the "newest" upstream version 1.51 of
jumpnbump which I plan to package for debian unstable. In any case this is
a bug of jumpnbump and not of jumpnbump-levels as you already said.

Greetings,
Kilian.

Bug reassigned from package `jumpnbump-levels' to `jumpnbump'. Request was from kilian@nihilnovi.de to control@bugs.debian.org. (Thu, 02 Oct 2008 09:54:04 GMT) (full text, mbox, link).

Is anyone going to package version 1.51? 6 years later, it seems 1.50 is
still the version of this package in Sid. This bug with springs being at
the top of the level is really annoying and kind of ruins the game.

I wouldn't count on that.

You could try to package version 1.51 yourself based on the current
packaging. Actually the package needs a complete update to newer
packaging helpers like dh-sequencer. Several bugs could be addressed in
this process. You are more than welcome to join the team. I'm sure there
would be someone who could help you on your way.

Eh, why not. I might as well give it a go.

One problem: I actually tried to find version 1.51, but I wasn't able
to. The only places I could find to download Jump'n'Bump were these sites:

http://jumpbump.mine.nu/
http://gnu.ethz.ch/jumpbump.mine.nu/

Both of these sites seem to be defunct now, so I turned to archive.org.
They both seem to be the same thing, basically. They offer a download
for version 1.50, and under the port sub-directory, they both have a
file called "jumpnbump-1.55.tar.gz", but this file contains source
that's labelled as being version 1.50. Looking at the contents, compared
to version 1.50+dfsg1, it seems "1.55" only comments out some lines,
changes some variables to constants, adds some text to the readme, and
has a different set of files for building.

Can someone point me to version 1.51 of Jump'n'Bump?

Puh, beats me. I found https://www.icculus.org/jumpnbump/. This seems to be the Windows
port of Jump'n'Bump. Perhaps the CVS contains some hints about the linux

The instructions for accessing the CVS repository aren't working for
me; the server is refusing the connection.

In 2004, when the guy's homepage was last archived by archive.org, his
email address was listed as being florian.proff.schulze@gmx.net, so
I've sent an email to that address in the hope that it's still an
email address in use by them.

I assume you are using the current Debian packaging of jumpnbump as a
template for your own package. You should note all build errors (build
log is preferable). You can ask specific questions about building your
package on debian-mentors@lists.debian.org or at #debian-mentors on
irc.debian.org.

See http://mentors.debian.net/intro-maintainers for more information.

Feel free to ask for sponsorship on debian-devel-games@lists.debian.org

Good news and bad news:

The good news: I found out why I wasn't able to compile version 1.51.
The order of $(SDL_TARGET) and $(LIBS) in the makefile was switched, and
that's what caused the problem; $(SDL_TARGET) needs to come first.

The bad news: version 1.51 doesn't actually solve this particular bug.
Kilian must have been misinformed. (I'm sure I ran the 1.51 binary, by
the way, because I noticed I had to modify the PREFIX variable before
compiling to get it to use /usr/share/games/jumpnbump/jumpbump.dat by
default, rather than going for
/usr/local/share/games/jumpnbump/jumpbump.dat.)

Honestly, in light of this, I don't see much point in putting in the
effort to update the package. From what I can tell, the main advantages
of version 1.51 over 1.50 are support for bzip2-compressed levels (not
very useful given the size of the levels), and the code being somehow
refactored to make it more readable, or something. The changelog also
mentions AI, but I can't discern a difference between 1.50+dfsg1's AI
and 1.51's AI, so I guess that particular change happened with version
1.50 (whether it was addition of AI in the first place or some kind of
upgrade).

I guess, until someone decides to trawl through this codebase and fix
the bug, the best solution is to use maps that have ceilings, or that
otherwise keep you away from the top-left corner of the screen.

Oh, by the way, I kind of mentioned this before, but I want to say it
explicitly: this bug report's name is misleading. The bug isn't the
rabbit "disappearing". The actual problem is that there is a series of
springs added just above the room on the left side. Specifically, these
springs appear in the first, fourth, sixth, seventh, eighth, and tenth
columns from the left.

you can change the title of the bug by means of the BTS control server:
https://www.debian.org/Bugs/server-control

So, isn't there a way to fix that level before packaging it?

Nope. This affects *all* levels (I have about 250 levels from a few
sources, and I've tested dozens of them). The springs in the top-left
seem to be something added by the Jump'n'Bump engine, not a part of any
actual level data.

I think I found the culprit: If the bunny jumps out of the screen, its
y-coordinate becomes negative. Thus, the array that is checked for the
position of the objects on the map overflows and returns some bogus,
e.g. that there are springs whereas there aren't. The attached patch
checks for the y-coordinate and caps it at zero.

Best regards,

Fabian

Yep, your patch definitely fixes it! Great!

Have you sent the patch upstream? It would be marginally better if they
made a 1.52 release with this bugfix applied than if the fix was
Debian-specific.

I'd love to submit it upstream. The question is, *who* is upstream?!

Nevermind, I'll file a pull request against the repository on github
later.

Funny how history has caught up, as I just realized that I filed the
original bug report myself more than 8 years ago. :)

I suppose that would be this:

https://www.icculus.org/jumpnbump/
Git repo: git://git.icculus.org/crow/jumpnbump.git
Email: florian.proff.schulze@gmx.net

Hasn't been updated in 10 years, but I exchanged a few emails with him
the last couple of days about the outdated front-page info about CVS, so
he's definitely still there.

Neat, could you please point him to this:

https://github.com/fschulze/jumpnbump/pull/1

Also, do you know if this is the same "Florian Schulze" who made also
PrBoom?
