Subject: lists.debian.org: Request for debian-publicity and debian-publicity-private
Date: Mon, 15 May 2006 19:03:22 -0500
Package: lists.debian.org
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

following the discussion here on debconf about "Representing Debian", we
decided to try to use two new lists to coordinate the communication of
Debian to the external world.

Name:
debian-publicity@lists.debian.org
debian-publicity-private@lists.debian.org

Rationale:
We're a large group of people who are interested to improve the
external communication of Debian and we need mailing list to coordinate
the work. This list will be used:
- to setup a common infrastructure that could be reused by anyone doing a
Debian booth (and setup for example a calendar to share the "physical"
  resources as effectively as possible)
- to improve the existing events webpages
- to draft and propose Debian announces
- to collect information that should be communicated to the wider Debian
  audience

Short description:
debian-publicity: Coordinating Debian's external communication
debian-publicity: Coordinating Debian's external communication -- private
issues only

Long description:
debian-publicity:
This list is used to coordinate all the work related to the external
communication of Debian: drafting new announces, collecting important
information that Debian should relay to its community, improving the
infrastructure offered to people who want to create Debian booth, etc.

debian-publicity-private:
This list covers the same topic than debian-publicity except that it
handles issues that can't be handled on a public list like coordinating
press releases with other parties.

Category:
debian-publicity: Miscellaneous Debian lists
debian-publicity-private: Miscellaneous Debian lists

Subscription policy:
debian-publicity: open
debian-publicity-private: open to all DD, and some "admin" could add
non-DD if needed. The admins should be the press team aka Martin Joey
Schulze <joey@debian.org> and Alexander Schmehl <tolimar@debian.org>

Post policy:
debian-publicity: open
debian-publicity-private: open

Web archive:
debian-publicity: yes
debian-publicity-private: no (but archives should be available to DD on
master like debian-private)

Thanks!

Seconded.

> debian-publicity-private@lists.debian.org

Not seconded. Rationale: I don't see why to create this list and why not
to simply keep using the press@ alias, which is archived for DDs on
master, just like lists are. Subscription is going to be controlled
anyway.

Why couldn't DD subscribe themselves without control?

You use the hash-token subscription method but you only allow it for
@debian.org email. I don't see the point of not using a list since the
informations are available, we ought to make it easy to be able to follow
what's going on instead of having to setup a scary script to follow the
archived mbox.

One reason I see is, that it's easier to add people to a mailing list,
than to an alias.

The website now fails to build:

make -C MailingLists install
make[2]: Entering directory `/org/www.debian.org/webwml/english/MailingLists'
../../english/MailingLists/mklist -f ../../english/MailingLists/lists.cfg -s
can't find ../../english/MailingLists/desc/misc/debian-publicity: No such file or directory at ../../english/MailingLists/mklist line 105.
make[2]: *** [subscribe.wml] Error 2

debian-publicity exists in english/MailingLists/desc/devel but is requested
in english/MailingLists/desc/misc.

To what category do these lists belong?

Jens

Hi.

I just split your Wishlistbug for debian-publicity and
debian-publicity-private.

the first one has been established, the second one will be handled as
Bug#369018.

Listmaster have to discuss that, the subscriber-policy is unusual and
can't be done out of the box.

Yours,
Cord, Debian Listmaster of the day

Maybe http://lists.debian.org/debian-publicity/ should be updated.
It still says [dead list]. And a couple of moments ago, it hadn't
archived anything since 2002.

Anyway, the list proposal sounds nice, but it does not seem to me to
be a press team alternative.

To clarify, I don't mean that I'm opposed to the list, I just don't see
enough merit in it to second the list creation.

No point in keeping this request open, the current process doesn't seem to
require this private list. So closing it.
