There should be a default theme that would be appealing for users that
is not the default gnome theme. My choice would be tango [1]* that is
largely used by other applications also (that could be turned default),
or suede [2].

I think this is important to improve debian desktop user experience,
mostly new users, to have a nice desktop environment.

* tango is considered non-free by debian policy because of CC-AS
license, true?

We can't change the default icon theme right now. Once we get the Tango
licensing issues solved, well, that *might* be considered.

For what concerns any other theme, we can't ship a 20% complete theme as
the default.

The bug is still present, even if you can't ship with tango. Please
reopen the bug. Being a minor bug, it is not considered for etch
release, so it is must remain open until we can ship tango, or other
complete icon theme, or until default icon theme is changed to an
appealing version.

Subject: Collaborative Artwork
Date: Wed, 28 Jun 2006 00:41:34 +0200
I think that Debian, the universal operating system don't have need
only of a pretty wallpaper or splash from a "genius" artist. Debian is
maintained and developed by many peoples, the packages are an example
of quality produced with the community collaboration.

A sporadic and spontaneous contribute is good but don't solve the
problem to create a coherent and quality look and feel or a strong
identity for the new desktop users for a long time, an error example
is a GDM theme that I've created some time ago, I'm created and tested
it on my computer with my 1024x768 resolution but with others
resolutions it didn't work well and for time reasons I don't update
it.

In the same way I think that the contest is not the just way because
the perception of what is pretty or not is relative and subjective the
very problem is the quality of the user experience that can be solved
only with the community collaboration, Tango is a good example of high
quality "collaborative artwork" based on some guidelines.

For these reasons I'm propose a new project to solve this "bug", some
months ago I had already started it
http://alioth.debian.org/projects/debianseyes/, this is the first
theme draft/example/incomplete to populate it
http://mockuplab.googlepages.com/DebiansEyes-Preview.svg.

P.S.
Sorry for the bad english....
