Subject: squid: "No address records" error for www.microsoft.com, etc.
Date: Thu, 18 May 2006 17:28:51 -0400
Package: squid
Version: 2.5.13-2
Severity: important

Trying to get to www.microsoft.com results in a "No address records" error.

$ host www.microsoft.com
www.microsoft.com CNAME toggle.www.ms.akadns.net
toggle.www.ms.akadns.net CNAME g.www.ms.akadns.net
g.www.ms.akadns.net CNAME lb1.www.ms.akadns.net
lb1.www.ms.akadns.net A 207.46.198.60
lb1.www.ms.akadns.net A 207.46.199.30
lb1.www.ms.akadns.net A 207.46.20.30
lb1.www.ms.akadns.net A 207.46.19.30
lb1.www.ms.akadns.net A 207.46.20.60
lb1.www.ms.akadns.net A 207.46.19.60
lb1.www.ms.akadns.net A 207.46.198.30
lb1.www.ms.akadns.net A 207.46.225.60

i.e., it has no A records, but has a CNAME, which in turn has no A records
but is a CNAME, which finally resolves to a number of A records.

There might be a pedantic reason why CNAME records are ignored by squid,
but this (failure to reach such a big site) should, IMHO, definitely be
considered a serious problem.

Hi Ambrose,
I cannot reproduce this bug. On all of my systems squid is correctly
resolving www.microsoft.com, which is a CNAME just like in your case:

# host www.microsoft.com
www.microsoft.com is an alias for toggle.www.ms.akadns.net.
toggle.www.ms.akadns.net is an alias for g.www.ms.akadns.net.
g.www.ms.akadns.net is an alias for lb1.www.ms.akadns.net.
lb1.www.ms.akadns.net has address 207.46.225.60
lb1.www.ms.akadns.net has address 207.46.19.60
lb1.www.ms.akadns.net has address 207.46.20.30
lb1.www.ms.akadns.net has address 207.46.20.60
lb1.www.ms.akadns.net has address 207.46.198.30
lb1.www.ms.akadns.net has address 207.46.198.60
lb1.www.ms.akadns.net has address 207.46.199.30
www.microsoft.com is an alias for toggle.www.ms.akadns.net.
toggle.www.ms.akadns.net is an alias for g.www.ms.akadns.net.
g.www.ms.akadns.net is an alias for lb1.www.ms.akadns.net.
www.microsoft.com is an alias for toggle.www.ms.akadns.net.
toggle.www.ms.akadns.net is an alias for g.www.ms.akadns.net.
g.www.ms.akadns.net is an alias for lb1.www.ms.akadns.net.

Maybe you have some other issues with your resolver.

FWIW, this happened last week. But only for a minute. When I tried to
reproduce it the problem disappeared.

I don't know what the cause is; it is intermittent but it is definitely
there. Very weird.

Perhaps there's something very subtly wrong with the way Microsoft sets
up their DNS.

Hi Ambrose,
I still can't reproduce this bug. If you didn't experience it in the
last months, I'd close this bug as not related to squid but caused by
resolver or DNS server issues.

L

Hi Luigi,

I think it happened once or twice, but I guess it could be resolver
related. I don't know how to reproduce it.

Hi,
I'm closing this bug since submitter agree that is related to
