Description : An open-source real-time strategy engine. It currently is similar to the late-90's game "Total Annihilation" and allows you to play using the same units assuming you already own the game.

Message #17 received at 367883@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
Note that both our website and the wikipedia entry are slightly outdated
regarding what is *possible* with the (free, GPL'ed) engine:
There is a very playable, though unconventional, "mod" (read: content
package), called "NanoBlobs" that's licensed under a combination of CC & GPL,
which doesn't contain or depend on any Total Annihilation content or
intellectual property.
Hence I'm convinced it should very well be possible to make an entirely free,
redistributable package of it at this moment.

As discussed on IRC, GPL is OK but CC isn't, for main. We're aiming at a
`bare' engine packages with instructions about how to install mods.

Just for the record, and because QA members regularly check the status
of ITPs: Tobi and I are working on polishing the licensing of this
package (and writing the copyright file), which should be hopefully
achieved soon, once all unclear license statements are sorted out.
So yes: We are still interested in this package and working on it.
Cheers,

Back in 2007 Cyril Brulebois did a license analysis:
http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-games/2007/10/msg00002.html
Unfortunately most of what he found still applies to the latest release.
In addition, some discussion from the upstream IRC channel:
<pabs3> which of the games are open source?
<DeM0nFiRe> All of them, I think. The engine is released under GPL, so it would have to be OSS for all, unless there's another license I don't know about'
<pabs3> the PURE game at least isn't
<jk`gentoo> kernel panic is the most free one atm
<DeM0nFiRe> Ok, then I have no idea XD
<jk`gentoo> but even it has not a license policy
<jk`gentoo> just CA plans to become 100% FSF free
They are going to be making a new release soon, I'm going to do a review
of the master branch of their git repo and try and get the issues fixed
for the next version.

Message #58 received at 367883@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
17:12 <stuckey> I'm just wondering what the status of spring being put
in Debian is.
17:12 <pabs> ah
17:12 <stuckey> There are two mods now that are free.
17:13 <pabs> well the copyright/license situation wasn't encouraging
so I lost motivation there and moved on to other stuff
17:13 <stuckey> Have you played this game?
17:13 <pabs> no
17:13 <stuckey> What's wrong with the copyright/license?
17:14 <stuckey> From what I understand, the license on the spring
engine is gpl v2.
17:15 <pabs> I don't remember exactly, KiBi did an analysis several
years ago and most of that seemed to still apply when I started
looking at it
17:15 <pabs> details linked from the WNPP bug IIRC
17:16 <stuckey> WNPP bug?
17:16 <pabs> 'Work Needed, Prospective Packages'
17:16 <pabs> wnpp.debian.net/
17:16 <stuckey> Ah, okay. Sorry, I'm just a user, not a developer.
17:17 <pabs> http://bugs.debian.org/367883
17:19 <pabs> which is the second mod that is free? I know the kernel
panic one was
17:20 <stuckey> Spring 1944
17:20 <stuckey> I tried it a while back and it was certainly playable then.
17:21 <pabs> hmm, where is the license documented?
17:22 <pabs> nice looking mod
17:23 <stuckey> Yeah it is, though it has a long way to go.
17:40 <stuckey> Okay, so it seems to be a mixture of the creative
commons license and the GNU license.
17:42 <stuckey> There's a CC and a GNU license included in the /docs
folder when you download the mod.
17:53 <pabs> cool

Message #63 received at 367883@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
Hi all spring enthusiasts,
I'm packaging spring from scratch but I already looked at ubuntu's PPA work,
I'm in contact with a DD which probably will sponsor those packages.
Preliminar packages are present on mentors.debian.net and binaries on
http://alioth.debian.org/~mammadori-guest .
The packages are not in their final release, some copyright files and library
paths must be addressed but they are in a working and playable state.
