Subject: xserver-xorg-video-ati: Machine freezes on Radeon 7000/VE with DRI enabled
Date: Fri, 05 May 2006 11:46:36 +0200
[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Package: xserver-xorg-video-ati
Version: 1:6.5.8.0-1
Severity: important

The machine often freezes after an indefinite time of running X. In these
cases, it doesn't respond to keyboard (including console switch), mouse or
network (including ping). Sometimes I can work for hours without a crash,
sometimes the machine crashes after a few minutes.

The crashes only appear when DRI is enabled. They appear in both version
6.9.0.dfsg.1-6 and 1:7.0.15 of the xserver-xorg package. I tried the debian
-k7 flavour of kernel versions 2.6.15-8 and 2.6.16-10. I tried different
settings for AGPMode ind the Device section of xorg.conf.

Finally, I know some way to reproduce the crash on my system. In the Gimp,
open the dialog "Adjust color curves". The move around the mouse over the
graph for a few seconds.

Greetings,
    Sven

I attached the log with DRI enabled.

What additional configuration file do you need?

Thanks.

Does either of the following options make a difference?

	Option "SilkenMouse" "off"
	Option "ColorTiling" "off"
	Option "SWcursor"

If any of these doesn't seem to make any difference, please double-check
in the log file that it's really in effect.

Also, if you're using Option "AGPMode" or any other AGP/DRI related
options, does disabling them make a difference?

Finally, does running at depth 16 instead of 24 make a difference?

> What additional configuration file do you need?

Just xorg.conf.

No.

I don't understand what it means to "disable" the Option "AGPMode".

Yes. The X server doesn't crash at 16 bpp.

Bummer, thanks for trying.

It would be great if you could try with a DRM built from DRI CVS, see

Just don't specify it or comment it out, but the log file you provided
looks like that's already the case.

I would have expected that the xorg.conf file I provided shows that I
already did that -- thus my confusion.

Thanks! It looks like this will have to be worked around upstream by not
enabling the DRI by default in depth 24 with this card (family). :(

I think i have the same reported bug but on a Radeon 9000 pro 64mb ram and OS
Debian testing "Etch" Xorg 7.0 and latest xserver open driver. Really am
hoping somebody would fix that error because i see a lot of guys asking for
help but seldom they report a bug..they usualy lose their will waiting at
irc@#debian for help and if not given any i guess they resign. I sure hope
you will find the solution. I can tell you the mistake is the same in ubuntu
dapper and in suse...i tried those distros from different HDD wich i have for
testing and the same graphic card and motherboard. To the objection something
maybe wrong with hardware i must say...the same machine but with HDD equiped
with furniture deliverer you know gates, windows etc...works fine and Debian
Sstable Sarge worked fine also...but you know...etch looks so nice and new it
should work also...ha? YOu can figure it out...i am sure. Thanks in advance!

No, this bug is specific to the RV100 family (Radeon 7000, M6, RN50).

Followup-For: Bug #366114

Michel,
Comments at https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6429
provided me with a soultion for this.

Building xf86-video-ati-X11R7.1-6.6.0.tar.gz and replacing ati_drv.so and
radeon_drv.so from the 1:6.5.8.0-1 package with these fixed the issue.

Of interest is that I have a PCI variant of the card and no AGP support on
my motherboard so this may rule out AGP related issues.

Regards,
Matt

Thanks, but 6.6.0 didn't contain the fix I mentioned. If 6.5.8 is
broken, most likely so is 6.6.1, and we still don't know whether the fix
in current git resolves this issue.

Very unlikely, as that's about a different brand of hardware.

The symptoms you describe would be very unusual with the DRI disabled.
Please double-check this.

Indeed, and you may note that it's in state 'RESOLVED FIXED'. Please try
current xf86-video-ati git.

Also note that Debian #366114 actually refers to this, and indeed it's
probably a better match for you, as it's also about an RV100 derivative.

For those interested in #354221, the same suggestions (disable the DRI
or try xf86-video-ati git) are still valid, as the same problem happened
to affect both RV100 and R300 derivatives.

These bugs should be fixed upstream in xf86-video-ati 6.6.2. Please
reopen if you're still having the same issue with xserver-xorg-video-ati
1:6.6.2-x or newer.
