Hi,

apt-build really lacks of support right now.
It works pretty well, but currently it is not capable to deal with
every particular case that it might encounter.
Many improvements could be done, mainly by using libapt-pkg-perl and
enhancing it (like adding new bindings), instead of using external
programs such as apt-get or apt-cache.

I have no time and no interest in working on apt-build, since I never
used it.
I only wrote it as a proof of concept that Debian could work the way
Gentoo did.

If you want to kick out Gentoo and source based distro, please consider
helping apt-build.

A project is already set up on Alioth.

Cheers,

Perhaps some bits from apt-build can e merged to sibling projects like
apt-src, sbuild or similar.

I'm not sure what you mean here, but Debian already has several tools to
build, test and improve debian source packages. Just to name a few ...
starting from [ the bare apt-get build-dep && --build, several
<SCM>-buildpackage, debuild, pbuilder, apt-src, sbuild and probably several
unofficials like apt-fu ... and ending with the famous
wanna-build/buildd/sbuild infrastructure along with dak ]

These are really no good reasons and probably a loose bait, I doubt there is
something or someone to kick out ;-) Again I'm not sure what the definition
of source based distro is and what is Debian lacking exactly ;-) IMHO having
tools to build the distro source packages implies being a source based
distro, but Debian has always has such tools and infrastructures. I really
can't think of other distribution on the Earth with so many build tools.

> A project is already set up on Alioth.

Good. No offence plase, but I realy do not see the point of having so many
build wizards ;-) Consolidate please ;-)

apt-build's main purpose is about recompiling packages with gcc
optimization flags.
However, it is designed to be an apt-get like tool. None of the software
you quoted can pretend to be as simple as apt-get (maybe apt-src).
apt-build tries to.

Hey, just kidding. :-)

I cleary agree. But today, we have a simple tool called apt-get to
install a binary package but none to build && install a source
package, furthermore, with optimized compilation flags.
This is what apt-build is about: compiling and installing Debian
sources on the fly, as simply as apt-get do it for binary packages, or
emerge for Gentoo.

Hi Julien,

It is a nice tool to tackle Gentoo. I will play with it in some weeks
and probably join the team (i.e. you actually) on Alioth. ;)

I also will begin testing apt-build over the next few weeks and desire
to join the team. I admit I am a fairly new programmer, but I think
apt-build is a wonderful idea and would enjoy collaborating with everyone to
help with this package. Feel free to email me with any ideas I could
help with, even documentation. Thanks.

Found this bug which is a bit old but, if you still need more developers,
please let me know. My day job is programming, but I've never contributed to
Debian. I figured a RFH would be a good place to start.

retitle 365427 O: apt-build -- apt-build -- frontend to apt to
noowner 365427
thanks

Hi,

This is an automatic email to change the status of apt-build back from ITA
(Intent to Adopt) to O (Orphaned), because this bug hasn't seen any activity
during the last 6 months.

If you are still interested in adopting apt-build, please send a mail to
<control@bugs.debian.org> with:

 retitle 365427 ITA: apt-build -- apt-build -- frontend to apt to
 owner 365427 !
 thanks

However, it is not recommended to keep ITA for a long time without acting on
the package, as it might cause other prospective maintainers to refrain from
adopting the package. It is also a good idea to document your progress on this
ITA from time to time, by mailing <365427@bugs.debian.org>.

Thank you for your interest in Debian,

Hello, I am looking to get involved in debian development and would
like to start with helping this package as I have interest in source
compilation.

Please let me know how I can help this package get out of adoption.

Thanks,
Pranith

Hi Pranith,

currently I am working to port apt-build completely to AptPkg module. At
the moment I have implemented mappings (from AptPkg::Package to
AptPkg::Source objects). Now I am looking how to install packages over
Perl modules (and how to track build dependencies). If you are
interested to help, please mail me directly to get involved (then I will
send you a copy of my (heavily unstable) working branch with comments).

Regards

Dominique
