Package: xorg
Version: 1:7.0.14
Severity: important
Hello,
I have upgraded my sid system to xorg 7.0 and my keyboard stops to
work. Here are the symptoms :
* With a standard xorg.conf
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Generic Keyboard"
Driver "kbd"
Option "CoreKeyboard"
Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
Option "XkbLayout" "fr"
EndSection
Each key of my keyboard (except the numerical pad) does a resolution
switch (as Ctrl-Alt-+ does). I can only press Ctrl-Alt-Bkscp to escape.
The Xorg log has these strange lines at the end :
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Configured Mouse" (type: MOUSE)
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Generic Keyboard" (type: KEYBOARD)
expected keysym, got XF86_Switch_VT_1: line 8 of xfree86

The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:

Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server
(**) Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"

select returned 1
[...] a dozen of this "returned"
* If I change my xorg.conf by putting a fool name for XkbRules :
Option "XkbRules" "foo"
in this case, the keyboard works except the shift, control, alt keys.
The Xorg log is only :
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Configured Mouse" (type: MOUSE)
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Generic Keyboard" (type: KEYBOARD)
Couldn't load XKB keymap, falling back to pre-XKB keymap
(**) Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
select returned 1

[...] to be continued...
So at this time, Xorg is not usable on my desktop.
I have also tried other layout with no succes...

Same situation for me here, but interestingly it's only one user's
account that has this problem. Unfortunately, it's the one account that
I really need to use X on.
I got it to work again by commenting out the -VMode/+VMode sections of
/etc/X11/xkb/symbols/pc/pc (as below). Of course, this disables
resolution changes, but I never use that anyway...
// -VMode switches to the previous video mode
// key <KPSU> {
// type="CTRL+ALT",
// symbols[Group1]= [ KP_Subtract, XF86_Prev_VMode ]
// };
key <KP7> { [ KP_Home, KP_7 ] };
key <KP8> { [ KP_Up, KP_8 ] };
key <KP9> { [ KP_Prior, KP_9 ] };
// +VMode switches to the next video mode

XKB files have been moved into /usr/share/X11/xkb, so it is very strange
that your workaround has any influence. I can see only 2 reasons at the
moment:
* Some of your X packages have not been upgraded to X.Org 7
* The XKBPATH environment variable is set to /etc/X11/xkb
Can you please check?

Thanks for the clues.
Found out I've still got xlibs 6.9.0.dfsg.1-6 installed.
When I try to apt-get remove this, it also removes:
gnome-applets gnome-control-center gnome-panel gnome-session
gnome-terminal nautilus totem totem-gstreamer
When I reinstall these, it reinstalls xlibs.
gnome-control-center 1:2.12.3-2 depends on xlibs (unversioned)
(bug #365977, perhaps?)
totem-gstreamer 1.2.1-4 depends on xlibs (>= 4.2.1-9)
xlibs (transitional?) 1:7.0.* is still in experimental
This may explain why the /etc/X11/xkb files are still in play?
I'll try installing the experimental xlibs and see what happens.

Sorry I was unclear, this one is normal.
But no package should use files from /etc/X11/xkb anymore in unstable,
that's why I do not understand why your fix does work.

As Antoine Sirinelli, if I change my xorg.conf by putting a foo name

And nothing special on standard error output.

Moreover the roller of mouse (USB) don't work for copy/paste :
- nothing of all with xterm ;
- with rxvt and firefox, in the same window it's good, but not from one
window to another.
-->
I have another machine in testing uptodate, the upgrade cause no
problem... The only specificity which I see to the broken system, it's
that it was not reinstalled for a long time (beginnig with a stable

Do you have xkb-data installed? If yes, can you please
tar jcf xkb.tar.bz2 /usr/share/X11/xkb
and send me this xkb.tar.bz2 file?

Ok, your XKB settings look safe. The error message seems to tell that
XF86_Switch_VT_1 is not defined in your XKeysymDB. I do not know how
this can happen. If I had a similar problem, I would check that this
file is identical to the one found in libx11-data, and run
strace -f -e open startx 2> open.log
to see where X looks for its files.

I had the same problem on my computer. After upgrading from 6.9.x to
7.0.x pressing any key on the keyboard caused the resolution to change.
If it matters, this install of Debian is ancient, going back probably to
Hamm or Bo, but has been running unstable for many years. A different
computer that started as Sarge/Etch and is now unstable upgraded with no
issues.
I worked around the problem by renaming /etc/X11/xkb/compat and
/usr/share/X11/xkb/compat. My keyboard now works perfectly, probably
because in the log I get:
(WW) Couldn't load XKB keymap, falling back to pre-XKB keymap
and to stdout/stderr:
The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:
> Error: Can't find file "complete" for compat include
> Exiting
> Abandoning compatibility map "default"
Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server
So I suspect by renaming the compat directories I have merely caused
xkbcomp to fail, which avoids the problem.
Hopefully this is a useful work around until the real source of the
problem can be found.

I think the problem is here.

If I move this directories to the home root, I get the same errors in
logs/standard error but my keyboard don't work correctly : the Shift
and Alt Gr does nothing. In fact it work like if put "foo" or "xfree"
instead of "xorg" for XkbRules.

Thank for your intention, I hope this help anybody else.
BTW, since X11R6to7 upgrade I meet anothers errors, I don't know if
there's a link with this problem :
- the serrated roller of the mouse don't work correctly for copy/paste,
as I reported higher ;
- if I run a QT application (k3b, konqueror, kmail...) I get this error
"k3b: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libqt-mt.so.3: undefined symbol:
XkbSetPerClientControls" ;
- if I run mplayer (don't work at all) or xine (only in fullscreen) I ge
: "mplayer: symbol lookup error: mplayer: undefined symbol:
DPMSQueryExtension"
Sounds like things are pretty broken... And as I need soon my machine
with xfree and my keyboard, I think I will purge and reinstall all
packages about X. But it's not a good new :(

Denis Barbier give me this solution : remove any libX* files in /lib/
and restart X. All must run OK now :-)
We don't know why this files put here, but remove them are solve my
problem.
Another workaround :
# ln -s /usr/share/X11/XKeysymDB /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XKeysymDB
let back the keyboard with XkbRules "xorg" for me. But the problems with
the mouse, DPMS, QT are linked with the files /lib/libX* (there're not
need for this symbolic link once these files are removed).
Thank to Denis Barbier and Jeff Lessem, and the Debian X Strike Force.

Hi,
can other people with the same problem please confirm that they indeed
have bogus /lib/libX*.so* files? Then please make a tarball with these
files before removing them, maybe this could help us to understand
where do these files come from.
Thanks.
Denis

None of our machines have any /lib/libX* files.
The other workaround:
# ln -s /usr/share/X11/XKeysymDB /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XKeysymDB
changes the symptoms (the resolution changes stops). But now the keys
that previously changed resolution does not work at all.
The workaround we use is to change XKbdRules to "foo", this works ok,
but not all modifiers work as expected.
Original output from startx without any workarounds:

And if these files do not exist, please run
strace -f -e open startx 2> open.log
as root, and send this open.log file (compressed with gzip or bzip2).
Thanks

Thank you for your advice. In fact the bogus files were
in /opt/lib/NX/lib. So it was an old (1 year ago) and bad installation
(from an archive) of NoMachine libraries which mess up my system.
Advice for the future: always install debian packages...
If you want to have a look to the libraries, I can send you a copy.
Thanks again !
Antoine

We have found the origin of the bug: bad libraries badly installed.
Debian packages are not responsible of this issue.
I think this bug should be closed.
