Hi
I can reproduce this with a sarge system building an unstable chroot, though I
use a recent debootstrap. The funny thing is that building a sarge chroot
works like a charm...
Any hints how to debug this?
Cheers
Luk

I had a similar problem when trying to debootstrap a USB disk. Searching
about it I found a hint that the partition in question should have been
mounted using the "exec" option initially. Everything worked fine after
that.
So if the exec does the trick, does this actually render the problem
solved? (and hence bug status to be resolved?)

Hi,
Anthony Towns told me that this most probably was a problem in the local apt
setup, so i investigated more.
I found that :
- you have to add an explicit mirror, and not omit it as the manual page
seem to imply.
- using debootstrap with approx seems to be error prone. Strange, since it
worked flawlessly in d-i, but i didn't get apt when i tried it from an
installed etch system. Maybe an approx bug, not sure.
So, i wonder if the other reporters of this problem could give some hint about
how they invoked debootstrap, and what their setup was ?
Anthony, it would be great if you upgraded the manpage to actually match the
reality.
I think this should be kept RC at least until we have some comment from
Anthony about what this bug actually is, and some hints about how to work
around it.
Friendly,
Sven Luther

thanks
Well, thanks to Neil McGovern who helped me investigate this issue, we found
out that :
1) debootstrap defaults to ftp.debian.org when no mirror is given.
2) the ftp.debian.org archive has been vancouverized, and is no more
providing non-x86 archives (well, at least no powerpc archives), and thus
omitting the mirror will fail silently because of those missing archives.
3) there are no useful error messages about this fact, thus leading to the
error by mounting proc.
To solve this issue, i guess a solution is twofold :
1) debootstrap should default to a per-arch mirror. We need an appropriate
alias for such per arch mirror though (<arch>.ftp.debian.org for example).
2) debootstrap should warn the user if he is using an archive who is not
carrying the arch that the user is trying to debootstrap.
And in general, more speaking error messages would be welcome.
Friendly,
Sven Luther

I also have this bug when I try to build etch, but Sarge works.
The hint with using exec as mount option (edited /etc/fstab) didn't work for me. And I tried to build
i386, so it can't be an unsupported plattform the reason (used ftp.at.debian.org/debian). So it seems
that there are more bugs

regarding the initial bug...
The solution Sven has proposed can be improved, without all the mirror
bloat, I think. The sane thing to do would be for debootstrap to default
to what's in /etc/apt/sources.list when no mirror is given. This avoids
the logistical nightmare of having to make and update
$arch.ftp.debian.org foreach architecture. If you're using it in
sources.list, it has your architecture.
Cheers
Brian

The thing is sources.list often contains things other than the debian
mirror and it may be tricky to figure out what is the debian mirror and
what is something else.

Sure, but that doesn't prevent us from looking for "recognizable"
entries that match, say:
^\s*deb\s+(f|ht)tp://.*\.debian\.org/debian/\s+(etch|stable)\s+
and fall back to http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ in the event we can't
find a match. Or are you claiming the proposed regular expression would
not be general enough?
An even simpler solution would be to simply default to a mirror that
hosts all supported architectures... Surely there is one somewhere?

[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Two issues were raised in this bug.
1. debootstrap didn't fail early and died with a weird mount error
if a mirror didn't have an arch
This is no longer the case, for example:
joey@box:/tmp>sudo debootstrap sid sid http://debian.corenetworks.net/debian/
[sudo] password for joey:
I: Retrieving Release
I: Retrieving Packages
I: Retrieving Packages
I: Retrieving Packages
E: Couldn't download dists/sid/main/binary-armel/Packages
That was fixed in version 1.0.10:
* Abort if a Packages file failed to verify.
2. default mirror not suitable for all arches
The default mirror is now http.us.debian.org, and that mirror
(and generally ftp.cc.debian.org (with the exception of ftp.au)
currently include all release architectures.
So, closing.
