Subject: many curses applications (vi, aptitude) fail to draw
Date: Tue, 04 Apr 2006 13:44:41 -0400
Package: gnome-terminal
Version: 2.14.0-1
Severity: grave

Since I updated gnome-terminal today, I've had intermittent but
repeatable problems with curses programs not drawing properly. I
generally work with very tall terminal windows, 80x63 or so. If I create
a terminal window of that height, then create three tabs, in the third
one vi doesn't display properly - all I see is two lines of help text
from the usual vim startup screen.

Instructions to repeat:
1. Open a gnome terminal window.
2. Resize it to 80x63.
3. Open vim. See if it draws properly.
4. Press Ctrl+Shift+T to open a new tab.
5. Goto 3.

After three repetitions of the loop (total of 3 tabs open), vi no longer
draws properly.

severity 360786 normal
thanks

I inflated the severity of this bug.

This bug has been reproduced by a colleague of mine. He discovered that
a workaround was to resize the gnome-terminal window, then resize it
back to its original size. After that, vi draws properly.

Joe

Hello,

The workaround for me for this bug is to run "reset" in each
gnome-terminal. This gives me working terminals where vi, dselect,..
runs correctly.

I'm seeing the same behaviour in gnome-terminal 2.14.1-1

Another workaround is:

export TERM=linux

(but then this messes up things like the home/end keys in vi)

Matt
