UTF-8 should always be the default charset for XHTML documents, even when another default charset is selected for HTML. Example:

http://www.student.lu.se/~lak04vlo/quotation.xhtml
http://www.student.lu.se/~lak04vlo/quotation.xhtml.utf8

There should be no difference between how they are displayed, but there is (unless default charset is set to UTF-8).

Hi,

here is a patch to support application/xhtml+xml and use UTF-8 as
default character set for it.

The old xhtml support mentioned above is through the file debian/mailcap
(installed as: /etc/w3m/mailcap) which contains only the line:
application/xhtml+xml; cat %s; x-htmloutput
If /etc/w3m/mailcap is included in the config option "List of mailcap
files" this lets w3m read xhtml files as html files.
